Cadet-Captain Mike Name: Cursed Zone (Event)
Card: SC #083b (Common)
Points: 3
Ability: Reveal this event at the beginning of one of your turns and place its token anywhere on the play area (except on an island or
terrain): Any die rolls made for ships within L of the token get -2 to their results.

Unlike most Events, Cursed Zone stays on the battlefield for the rest of the game. That puts it in the same category as a weapon developed much later in history, poison gas: it can hurt you as well as the enemy if things go wrong.

There are multiple ways to make good use of a Cursed Zone. You could drop it right next to a fort, which will take a penalty on its gunnery rolls, while your ship hovers just outside the Zone and bangs away at the fort normally. You could plop it into the middle of a battle where you've just been rammed; the reduced roll could work in your favor and keep you from losing a mast. You could throw it down right next to an enemy ship that's trying to make it over a Reef, lowering the reef roll and probably causing damage to the ship. Or you could play it on a ship that's about to open fire on you, ruining his shoot action. But wherever you put it, that's where it will stay, unless someone uses another event (Favor of the Gods) to make it go away.

There are plenty of possibilities. Choose wisely, though, or you might get bitten by your own reduced rolls later in the game.

Cursed Zone

The Cursed Zone can be used well offensively and defensively; it all depends on how you use it. Put it near your shipping lanes to hamper enemy efforts to shoot or ram your gold ships or put it in the middle of an enemy formation to hurt their own chances of surviving ramming and boarding attempts. It'll stay there for quite awhile, but will also hurt your ships if you get too close.

The three points you spend on it will last for a long time too.

I give Cursed Zone a 3.5/5.
