Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: HMS Greyhound (England)
Card: RV #033 (Rare)
Points: 7
Masts: 1
Cargo: 1
Moves: L+L
Guns : 2S
Hit %: 67 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Schooner. Forts cannot hit this ship.
Here's another speedy little gold runner with a
defensive ability.
Compared to yesterday's ship, the Pasha's Delight,
HMS Greyhound has slightly worse guns and an ability
that's a lot less likely to be useful. On the plus
side, she's two points cheaper. That's good news for
English admirals who might have a few points left
over from building their battle fleet and want a
small gold ship to keep them in the game.
If perchance your enemy does erect a fort, this
one-master can completely ignore it; or, if that
fort has no ships nearby to protect it, you can stop
for a few turns and do what damage you can. With
help from another ship, you could even wreck the
fort and then steal the best coin that paid for it.
Of course, the same seven points could buy a
different hound, HMS Hound, a Common with a hair
less speed and quadruple the cargo.
For the most part, HMS Greyhound is meant for
running gold, and with
L+L, I do mean running. She can't take any damage,
so send her to the
most remote wild islands where enemy fighters don't
prowl. England isn't known for her gold ships, but
if you plan to win by fighting, but want some gold
just in case, this little sloop is cheap enough and
fast enough to do the job.
Here is an interesting that requires some thinking
on how to use it. For 7 points, you have a very fast
1 mast schooner that has an ability not to be hit by
an enemy fort. Normally, this ship’s primary usage
is to help counteract the opponents use of forts,
but this ship may have other uses as well. For one,
with it’s high speed, this ship can be used with SCS
James Cook (super explorer ability) to go wild
exploring islands for your other ships. With a 2
rank cannon, this ship could be uses as a back up
fighter that could help finish off an enemy ship
that is down to it’s last mast, though you must get
within S to fire it. In most cases, this ship may be
used as a simple gold ship. Even though with one
cargo space, this ships very fast speed pretty much
allows it to pick up a coin quickly and bring it
back to the home island a very few turns. In the
end, it would depend on how one would be able use
this inexpensive ship for maximum effect for one’s
English fleet.

What always irritates me is the fact
that Wizkids didn’t have the consideration to
properly designate all of the other countries that
fought under the banner of Great Britain-they merely
categorized them all under “England”. At least in
Pirates of the Revolution, they made up for it with
decent ships for the British. This little ship in my
opinion is almost comparable to the HMS Europa
in the Pirates of the Spanish set with its greatness
and capabilities. This ship is in the “Excellent
Spot” for 1 and 2-Masted Ships, and this ship is no
doubt a must for any British collector. She’s seven
points, a fair deal for a ship with a 2S cannon and
great speed. What is rather disappointing is the
fact that this ship and the fleet she is in will
definitely require a Cargo Master to give this ship
an extra cargo space. Without the Cargo Master, this
ship will be nearly useless in collecting gold.
She’s preferable as a reconnaissance ship than as
ships which will get blown to pieces by any intact
fort, although that will be rather rare since
Wizkids provided the players who use the Pirates of
the Cursed Seas packs with switchblades, scorpions,
bombardiers, and such. For a cheap 10-point treasure
scout she packs quite a punch, being able to move 2L
before packing a good punch into an enemy’s side. Or
to make a rather expensive convoy escort, add the MI
Hermione Gold to give a better shooting range
against any non-British ship. In truth, under normal
circumstances this ship is a good ship, but all I
can say is if you are betting your dice that this
ship can beat a SM Harbinger without even
trying.

HMS
Greyhound
I'm not an expert on boats, but aren't schooners
supposed to have at least two masts? Tjos ship only
has one mast.
Powers: When the Revolution set was released, HMS
Greyhound's immunity to forts would seem like a
great skill to have. Nowadays, it's almost
worthless. This ship also has the Schooner keyword
for some reason, which is a little more useful these
days.
Cargo Space: One cargo space is still bad.
Masts: HMS Greyhound only has one mast, but the 2S
gun is good if you like sending one-mast boats into
battle.
Base Move: L+L is a great base move to have. It's
just too bad it's wasted on a ship that can't do
much with it.
Point Value: The only thing keeping me from scoring
the HMS Greyhound higher than Pasha's Delight is
that the Delight has a better immunity. You're only
paying 7 points for the Greyhound, but you're still
not getting a lot of value.
