I have to confess, when USS Superior first came out,
I could only think, "What a rip-off!"
On the surface, she looks like a pretty good ship.
Her cannons aren't super, but they do double damage,
which makes her quite a support fighter for only ten
points. But she's totally crippled by her one cargo
space. You can give her a Captain for fighting,
which leaves her way too slow, or you can speed her
up with a Helmsman and deny her the move/shoot she
needs to survive and be effective. It's a cruel
choice, and my best solution is "buy the Delaware
instead." The Delaware costs two points more, has
three cargo and one L-range cannon, and is otherwise
identical to this ship. Those extra cargo spaces
make all the difference between a playable ship and
an unplayable one.
But now that Savage Shores gave the USA the Cargo
Master crew, which adds 1 to the cargo of all
friendly ships, USS Superior becomes quite playable.
If' you're using the Cargo Master anyway, then add
this gunboat to your fleet with Captain and
Helmsman, and watch your enemy cringe when he
realizes that you have a really Superior ship.
Otherwise, USS Inferior would be a much better name.

This week’s “ships with one cargo space” is getting
boring. Le Solitaire was a terrible ship, and I hope
the USS Superior is better. She has one cargo space
but has the same ability as the Santos Romanos,
which puts her in a good position. One cargo space
may not be good, but use a cargo master to bring her
cargo space up to 2. Put a captain and a helmsman
crew on it, and the ship can become rather dreadful
if you use her with foul winds to get a high-quality
gunship into range. This ship may not be as decent
of a ship for treasure or any non-shooting purpose.
However, with the problems of large longships in
their set, it’s a no-brainer that the USA will need
one of these ships if they don’t want to be eaten
whole by an army of angry longships.
Americans have been in good hands ever since the
Crimson Coast set was first issued. Since then, they
have gotten better and better ships while most of
the other factions deteriorated. I personally
disliked that phase until it became more balanced
around the Frozen North. They gave the Americans
ample supplies of ships, and I hope any avid
American player will enjoy this ship if they have a
cargo master. This ship looks a lot better than Le
Solitaire, which we just reviewed yesterday.
Because Cargo Master(S) will be decisive in determining
whether or not this ship is good, if you use a Cargo
master, I rate her 3.75/5. If not, then take
a point off her score.
For those of you in the United States of America, happy early 4th
of July!

USS
Superior
Powers: When this ship hits another, the target
loses two masts.
Cargo Space: One cargo space. Give her a captain.
Masts: Two 3S guns give her average firepower, but
her strength is in her ability to take two masts
with each hit.
Base Move: Her greatest flaw, a single "L".
Point Value: The uSS Superior would make a great
backup fighter and for 10 points that's not too
unreasonable. A captain would be the best crew for
her since she can't afford to wait a turn for her
enemy to either move away or fire back.
