"French Repeats Week" kicks off with the first
L'Afrique, a gold ship from the Barbary Coast
release. I'd like to say something nice about her,
but I have to be honest: we're looking at a case
study in mediocrity here.
As long as she doesn't get hurt, she has S+L speed,
which combines with her cargo to make a good gold
ship. But if S+L speed and 4 cargo is what you want
in a French ship, you could do better with L'Heros
with more and better cannons, Le Courageux with fine
fighting ability, Le Geographe with twice the masts,
L'Intrepide for only five points, or Le Bon Marin,
probably France's finest gold ship, for six points.
Why bother with this barge, especially since an
enemy can cripple her speed with just one hit? She's
no fighter and no boarder, either. She isn't even
very attractive.
If they cut L'Afrique's price to, say, seven points,
she'd be a decent value. For nine points, the
Libellule will serve my gold needs much better. This
ship just doesn't do it for me.
