Ability: Junk, Mercenary, Dories. French crew can
use their abilities on this ship.
If you bought all six of the special value boxes of
Savage Shores, you got six double-sized deck plates
to make two enormous ten-masted junks.
These marked the first appearance of the Mercenary
faction since the Mysterious Islands release. The
two ships are very similar, but not identical.
I like the look of the Celtic Fury better; her sails
feature shamrocks, while the Shui Xian's sails seems
to be covered in Post-It notes. The Celtic ship is a
little better at long-range fire, and not quite as
good up close. The ability to use French crew gives
a slight advantage in the gold game; the Dories
ability accents this, not only by saving the ship an
S move before unloading and another S after, but by
overcoming the Mercs' inability to dock at a home
island at all.
Her linked crew, who is reviewed below, is a pure
fighter, giving a SAT and a bonus against the
English. The Celtic Fury has to have a Helmsman if
she's going to do anything useful, and a Captain if
she's going to use all those cannons to the fullest.
If you don't have the Merc generic crew, use the
French. If you can afford it, you could swap the
Captain for either the BC Jordan Dumas, who gives
the move/shoot and a reroll (very handy when you're
rolling for the SAT), or one of France's captains
who also allow an S-board, which you're sure to win
against anything smaller than ten masts.
Like the other ten-masted junks, the Celtic Fury is
over the top -- she's so much more powerful than
other ships, her only real competition is another
ten-master. For twenty-five points, she'd better be.
That point cost is high, but it's fair.
