Cadet-Captain Mike
Crew-fer Two-fer:
Name: Genny Gallows (Pirates)
Card: SM #PC-005 (Common)
Points: 3
Link: Genny's Red Rampage
Ability: One of this ship's treasures is worth +2
gold when she docks at your home island.
Genny Gallows' fluff text is one of the sadder
stories in the Pirates story line, and she also
seems plagued with bad luck when searching for
treasure. This crew, however, might be just the
ticket if you're planning on playing a gold game.
You'll want to put Genny on a fast ship, one that
can make two or three cruises in a game in order to
use her ability as much as possible.
Unlike many gold crew, however, this one doesn't
benefit from large cargo holds. Her bonus works just
as well if you only bring one coin home as if you
brought five or six. That means ships like Rover or
El Chico, with low cost and good speed but only two
cargo, can suddenly become profit centers for you.
Make three runs with Genny to the same island,
instead of one run with a bigger ship, and get the
+2 on treasure three times; that's six extra gold in
your pocket.
Three points is a fair price for this ability, which
can make you quite rich without much effort.
The only remarkable thing about Genny's Red Rampage
is their price.
Usually, the boarding bonus costs you four points,
so there's a small discount at work here. Why the
link to Genny? In game terms, say you board a ship
with the Rampage and steal a treasure, typically a
lousy 1-gold coin. Take it home and let Genny turn
it into a 3-gold coin. And since you stole the
1-coin away from the enemy, you've pulled ahead of
him by 4 gold. Do this twice, and both crew have
paid for themselves.
There's no shortage of crew (and ships) that give a
+1 boarding bonus.
Use this one to save a point, or if you want to use
the linked crew as a combo. None of the newer crew
offer either advantage. Sometimes, older is better.
