Guns : 3L,3S,3S,3S
Hit %: 200 (S), 50 (L)

Ability: English crew may use their abilities on
this ship.
The Pioneer is a pretty ordinary ship in nearly all
respects. She makes a decent fighter, especially if
you use her linked crew, Griffin (captain and
reroll), in addition to the mandatory Helmsman, but
the Pirates can do better (Eagle, Darkhawk II). She
can also play the ramming game, but the Pirates can
still do better (Adventure, El Ballista). Gold?
Don't bother.
Her ability can be useful if you want to add some
English fighting power, assuming you don't have a
big collection of Pirate crew already.
For two more points, you could get the similar Obago,
with more cargo, better cannons, and the ability to
use any crew at all. All in all the Pioneer rates
the word "okay," but not much more.

Name: Pioneer

Cargo: 3
Speed: L
Firepower: one 3L, three 3S cannons.
Cost: 10
Ability: English crew may use their abilities on

Our second ship of the week is the Pirate ship
Pioneer. Not unlike yesterday’s ship with four
masts, three cargo and L speed. With the ability to
use English crew.
Her ability isn’t that great, it costs around two
points, which isn’t going to break the bank. But the
Pirates have the best selection of crew going. So
what can the English offer over the Pirates? I can
only think of two, Lord Mycron and Thomas Gunn F/S.
Both could do okay, but if you wanted double actions
for ships then there are better Pirate options then
Lord Mycron. Thomas Gunn however, will give you move
+ shoot and any ship +1 to their cannon’s. Don’t
forget that both those crew have the loyal keyword.
So there has to be more English in your fleet
somewhere. Since there are quite a few Pirate
gunships which are good. But do sometimes lack that
killer blow, so an ability like Thomas Gunn could
prove flexible and useful.
With basic stats and an ability that isn’t going to
be a huge advantage. You have to ask, is it worth
it? For me probably not. I’ll put my points into
something else.
That’s take a look at the breakdown of costs.
