Yesterday's ship, the Stoneheart,
was built as a boarder, which is an unusual role for
a five-master. Most big ships are fighters, like La
Delacroix.
There's a lot to like about her,
like her fine cannons and her above-average speed.
There's also a lot to not like about her, like her
smallish cargo and her high price. The latter is
entirely due to her ability, which WizKids thought
was worth a lot more than it really is.
But if you have the points to
burn, that high price can work in your favor, since
you can fill her with expensive crew to make a
killer out of her. At a minimum, she can sail with
just a Captain. On the high end, use your
imagination. One fun combo would be BC Jordan Dumas
(captain and reroll), CC Gaston de St. Croix (SAT
and +1 vs English), and CC Monsieur Lenoir
(canceller).
La Delacroix isn't the best French
five-master out there; I give that title to Le
Soleil Royal. She isn't quite the worst, either
(that would be the Neptune). If she had some other
ability, her cost would come down
2-3 points and I'd recommend her
without hesitation. As she is, I recommend her with
the caveat "...if you can afford her." Other big
French ships cost less and most of them give more
bang for the buck. But if you can spend the points
on her, La Delacroix won't disappoint you.
