Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: Red Curse
(Pirates)
Card: RV #146 (Special Edition)
Points: 14
Masts: 4
Cargo: 5
Moves: L
Guns : 2S,3L,3L,2S
Hit %: 233 (S), 100 (L)
Ability: This ship may dock at an enemy home island
and load one treasure. If able, she must leave on
your next turn.
The Red Curse was one of the first batch of
value-box ships, and unlike most of them, she's
focused on treasure. Unlike many treasure ships,
though, she can also fight well.
Five cargo and the home-island-robber ability say
"gold ship" loud and clear. Four good cannons say
"fighting ship" pretty clearly, too.
Logically, your best move is to give her Captain and
Helmsman and use her for both roles at once. Even if
she never gets close to your enemy's home port, just
a feint in that direction will force him to react
and throw his own plans into disarray.
But she isn't the best ship you can get for that
role. If you don't plan to rob home islands, the
Darkhawk II has more cargo for four points less. If
you do want to use that ability, I'd spend one point
more on the White Rose, which has one slightly-worse
cannon but which doesn't need a Helmsman. If I
didn't own either of those ships, the Red Curse will
certainly get the job done, whatever that job might
be.

I think this ship would be better at fighting
then gold. Her guns and speed say fighting and her
large cargo and ability say gold.
Unfortunately her speed makes it hard to use that
ability. When nicking stuff off an enemy home island
you need to make a swift get-a-away. With a base
move of only L, that’s not going to happen. However,
load her up with a captain and helmsman and loiter
around the enemy home island. Then watch him come
for you, which could serve as a good diversion.
While the rest of your fleet get to work.
I can’t help but wonder, whether you’ll be better
off using another ship. Such as the Eagle, Jape or
Diamond Strike. However, she’s priced bang on but
it’s hard to get 4pts worth from her ability.
