The Fire & Steel release had a different version of
the Morning Star for each of the main factions. Most
of them were on the mediocre side. This Pirate
version (misidentified as Spanish on WizKids' site)
might be one of the better ones.
Her guns, cargo, speed, and ability are all in the
"ho-hum, so what else is new" category. Her low cost
sets her apart, though, for the same reasons as
yesterday's Flying Dutchman. This five-master costs
one point more, but has slightly better cannons and
an ability that, although unlikely, might come in
handy. If you'd rather, you can just give her a
Helmsman and use her as a gold ship that can ignore
small fighters, take a pounding from big ones, and
still have enough masts left to get home with the
goodies.
This Morning Star is not an exceptional ship, but
she can take on any of the game's major roles (gold,
fighting, and boarding) with an above-average chance
of success. Versatility is good. So is the value you
get from this ship.
Name: Morning Star
Masts: 5
Cargo: 6
Speed: S+S
Firepower: one 3S, four 4S
Cost: 9pts
Ability: Eliminate one of this ship's mast's when
she rolls a 1 on any cannon roll.
Morning Star is the cheapest five mast ship in the
game and she’s Spanish. Not the best guns or ability
in the world. However, she’s got an excellent cargo
hold and a decent top speed.
Gold collecting is clearly this ship’s main task but
she’s capable of more. You may not think that she’ll
make a good gunship but you’ll be wrong. Any five
master is formidable, some more then others. This
one is a support gunship for your main fighter. She
might not have that great guns but there are five of
them and further more. She costs the same as a
decent two mast gunship.
Kit her out with the usual captain and helmsman and
a shipwright. Having Robert Santana or Thomas Gunn
in your fleet might be handy to improve those guns.
The shipwright can deal with any dice rolls which
land a one. Keep her near another gunship which, if
your lucky will drew the enemies attention. Allowing
the less fearsome Morning Star the chance to strike.
With all those masts and a good top speed she’ll
serve well in the boarding roll too.
I’ve played against this ship many times and I still
ignore her more then I should. She has proved hard
to kill and landed more then her fair share of
damage against me. A good ship.
