Hey, group, it's been a while since we had some
card reviews. For this week, I just picked three
ships at random. Our first victim is a British
one-master from Fire & Steel, the Newport.
One thing is for sure: with one average cannon,
this little ship is not a fighter. With a low move
and below-average cargo, she isn't much of a gold
ship. And with one mast, she's no boarder. That
doesn't leave much, does it? I guess her role is to
be the Royal Navy's vulture, using her ability to
inflict a little extra punishment on enemies who
have already been beaten up by England's better
fighters. She'd need a Captain for that role. If you
really want an English vulture, you'd be better off
with the Mirage (a Savage Shores value-pack
windcatcher) if you can get her; she costs five
points more, but has triple the cannons, more speed,
and better cargo as well.
I have revamped my Magic Spreadsheet of Doom to
add a new category, support ship, and to give what I
hope are more accurate numbers for the ships I
review. In the Newport's case, those numbers are
uniformly poor. Her best rating is overall value for
points, because her cost is low. You don't pay much,
and you get what you pay for.
Goldship rating: 2.5 / 5
Gun Ship rating: 1.9 / 5
Boarding rating: 2.0 / 5
Support rating: 1.0 / 5
Value for points: 2.8 / 5
