Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: HMS Sea Phoenix (England)
Card: OE #052 (Common)
Points: 12
Masts: 2
Cargo: 4
Moves: L
Guns : 2S,3S
Hit %: 117 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: Junk. This ship may dock at an enemy home
island and load one treasure. If able, she must
leave on your next turn.
When the Sea Phoenix defected from the Jade
Rebellion (which happened in the Ocean's Edge
release), she apparently cloned herself, because
both the English and the French got her. The French
version is identical to the original, while this
English version got worse cannons, an ability that
is a bit more useful, and a higher price tag.
With four cargo, you might think this was a gold
ship, but her low speed and high point cost work
against her. But her poor cannons and low mast count
mean she's no fighter or boarder, either, so gold is
all she's good for. If you want to use her, give her
a Helmsman and send her to the wild islands. If you
want to use her ability, she also needs an armed
escort; two-masted ships die quickly if they venture
into enemy territory alone.
The operative phrase here is "if you want to use
her." The English have better gold ships, and they
also have better home-island robbers, like HMS
Gibraltar and HMS Lady Provost. The Sea Phoenix
isn't a bad ship at all, aside from my usual
complaint of "too slow," but 12 points for an
L-speed gold ship? You can do better.
