Cadet-Captain Mike
Name: La Serpiente (Spain)
Card: OE #065 (Common)
Points: 9
Masts: 2
Cargo: 2
Moves: L
Guns : 2S,2S
Hit %: 133 (S), 0 (L)
Ability: This ship gets +1 to her boarding rolls.
She gets +2 instead if her opponent is a sea
monster.
The "Serpent" is one of those ships whose intended
role is unclear. Her ability suggests that you
should set her up as a target for a sea beastie, and
then surprize the beastie when it boards her. But
I've never heard of anyone winning a Pirate battle
by setting themselves up as a target.
She's kind of slow for a gold ship, and doesn't have
the gold capacity to excel at it. Her cannons are
accurate, but short-ranged, and if you give her the
bare-minimum fighting crew of Captain and Helmsman,
that leaves no room for gold that you might steal by
boarding. And she's not a great boarding ship, her
ability notwithstanding, unless you can arrange to
only ram and board small ships.
I guess her best role is to be a gold ship with a
difference. Give her a Helmsman, and send her to a
wild island where the sea beasties hang out.
If they attack, La Sirpiente can give them a nasty
surprize; if they don't, you'll bring one treasure
home. I would try this only if up against an
opponent who usually uses sea creatures. I wouldn't
use her regularly, but for only nine points, she
might be worth a try.
