I've never met anyone who really
likes the Vikings as a faction. One or two of their
fighting longships get some action now and then, but
as a group, they aren't popular. The three big
reasons (I think) are their low mast counts, their
low speeds, and the pathetic lack of fighting crew
they can use.
The Freya has the low speed and
the low mast count, for sure. Her ability takes care
of the fighting-crew problem, but her guns are so
poor that trying to make a fighter of her will be a
big waste of points.
She sure can't board, either.
Maybe she's a Viking gold ship? Add a Helmsman and
she's one of their better gold runners, but that's
not saying much. At least you can use other
factions' Helmsmen, which is good because Viking
crew are hard to find. You could add a gold-running
crew from another faction as well, like the ones who
give you +2 on your gold when you unload, if you can
afford the point cost.
The bottom line on this ship is
that her cargo is good. End of story.
There isn't anything else good to
say about her. If you want to run gold, then you
shouldn't be using a Viking ship to do it, and if
you want to play the Vikings, you shouldn't be
playing a gold game. Her best statistic is her Rare
status, so you can use her for trade bait.
Otherwise, the Freya gets
below-average marks in every area.
