Cadet-Captain Mike |
Name:
Straw Man (Cursed)
Card:
DJC #020 (Common)
Points:
12
Masts: 2
Cargo: 2
Moves: L
Guns : 3L,3S
Hit %: 100 (S), 50 (L)
Ability: Fear. Once per turn, this
ship may randomly take one treasure from any ship
she touches.
In logic, a "straw man argument"
is a statement that is created for the sole purpose
of being knocked down, not one that is ever expected
to amount to anything. That's a perfect name for
this ship.
What were they thinking when they
asked 12 points for this? The Devil's Pay has
identical stats, a negative ability, but better
cannons, for only 4 points -- that's 1/3 the cost of
this ship. And what do the abilities gain you? Fear
gains you nothing 2/3 of the time, even if you get
close enough to use it. The treasure-steal ability
might be fun, but if you ever expect to use it,
you've got to add a Helmsman to catch those speedy
gold ships, and now you've got only one cargo free
for treasure. And you're paying 14 points for the
privilege of bringing that one treasure back.
The Cursed tend to be overpriced
and (in my opinion) difficult to win with. The Straw
Man is, unfortunately, a clear example of this. She
isn't the worst, but she's bad enough that I can't
recommend using her.
Ever.
