Mechanically, the second option on the learn action is very much blue and red, but since we’re at a university in this set, it seems reasonable to see it in all five colors. And as for Lessons, there are actually some quite interesting options available, allowing you to build a Lesson-using deck in a variety of ways. We’ll get to some of those in future reviews, but in the context of Poet’s Quill, you can think of it as being essentially free card advantage or card quality on an already-usable card. +1/+1 and lifelink may look small compared to some of the bigger, splashier spells, but it’s more than enough to win games when used properly, even before you factor in the bonus.

Learn is an intriguing toolbox mechanic, letting you tutor out spells from your collection (or sideboard) in constructed play…or, if you’ve nothing to learn, loot. It’s an interesting avenue that adds value to some cards that’s a bit more subtle, even if one of the more-popular formats (Commander) generally does not allow for the “outside the game” part to work like one would want it to. Besides that, Poet’s Quill isn’t half bad: lifelink is nice to get a bit of incremental advantage with each swing, and it’s cheap enough. Not apt to be an all-star, but it’s a decent spell with a fair bit of flexibility to it.
