PokePop’s House of Cards It’s Rainbow Last week’s column listed the important erratas from the PUI (Pokémon USA) era. However, the following question I received asks about WotC era errors and how they were handled. Matt asks: Gym series’ Rocket Minefield Gym (stadium card) says “Whenever a player puts a basic Pokémon onto his or her bench from his or her hand, he she flips a coin. If tails, put damage counters on that Pokémon." How many do you put on??????? Yes, this card was printed with an error. It should have read, “put 2 damage counters on that Pokémon.” All cards have this error and it is unplayable as printed. That fits WotC’s guidelines for issuing errata and so they corrected it. If the card had been misprinted with the wrong number, say 1 or 3, they would have ruled to play as printed. They were not as concerned, as PUI is, with cards being consistent between Japan and the rest of the world. They were more concerned with cards being easy to play for kids with no online access. They didn’t want amateur players to have to worry about keeping up with a long list of card corrections. However, this makes international play, especially at the top levels, more difficult. Which is a better philosophy? You be the judge. WotC erratas used to be on their website, but can still be found in the old version of the Compendium <www.compendium.pokegym.net>. Pokémon has a lot of “MetaRules”. These are rules that may, or may not, be found in the rulebook, but they determine on a high level how card interactions happen by limiting what can and can’t be done. Here’s a question that touches on one. catw0man asks: I have a question that's been bothering me for a while now. If something says to discard a specific energy type (such as the promo Kyogre EX, which requires you to discard a water energy), if you have only rainbow energies attached, do you still have to discard an energy? Thanks in advance! The MetaRule in question here revolves around what is meant by text that refers to energy or energy cards or a certain color. Obviously, a Basic Water energy card, with the big blue drop printed on it, is a Water Energy card. But what about a Rainbow energy card? We know that it can provide Water energy for the sake of paying for energy costs, but would it get discarded in the example above? Yes, it would.
**** This means that a rainbow energy card always gets discarded whenever an effect says to discard any color of energy. Even if, and a lot of people miss this one, you are using it to pay an energy cost of a different color! For example, if you use a Rainbow energy card and a Fire energy card on Rayquaza ex from EX Dragon and choose to discard Fire energy, you will discard both the Fire card AND the Rainbow! This is even though you used to Rainbow to pay a Lightning Energy cost. The reason is, that Rainbow is always a Rainbow and so when the Attack effect looked for Fire energy cards to count and discard, it saw the Rainbow. The fact that it’s “Energy Unit” was used up by a Lightning cost is beside the point. Now, note one exception to all of the above: If text refers to a “Basic Fire energy card”, then Rainbow or Multi will not fit the bill. They may be counted as Fire energy cards, but they are NOT Basic! OK, let’s wrap up with a quick one.
Well, yes and no. Yes, they will both work for each one,
individually. But no, they don’t protect each other. The
Evens one will be safe from Evens attacks and the Odds one
will be safe from Odds attacks. But when a Pokémon mentions
itself in Power or Attack text, it’s only talking about
itself, not other cards that happen to have the same name.
It’s called the Self Referencing Rule and you can even find
it referred to in current rule books. Check it out. |
