Hi everyone. Welcome to our Pokémon of the Week.
Today we’re reviewing Gengar, the Gas Pokémon.
Gengar was second place on our 100th
Pokémon of the week contest. I think it’s a good idea to review
the first 3 or 5 places, I haven’t decided yet, so I’ll let your
feedback decide for me… I said once Gengar is the king of
ghosts, and I still think so. Its special attack and speed make
it the fastest ghost sweeper and one of the best special
sweepers out there. Its defenses aren’t that great, but
hopefully it you won’t even notice it. I forgot to mention it is
also one of the easiest special sweepers to use, so I’ll suggest
this one for novices and veterans.
Levitate is not an awesome ability by itself, but
combined with poison type it’s awesome. Earthquake could be
Gengar’s worst nightmare, but it’s not thanks to levitate.
So, the move combinations for today are…
Gengar.
Nature: Timid (+ Speed, - Attack), Modest (+
Special attack, - Attack).
Equip: Salac berry / Petaya berry / Life orb /
Choice scarf / Choice specs.
EV´s: 252 Speed, 252 Special attack, 6 HP.
- Shadow ball
- Sludge bomb
- Psychic / Thunderbolt / Energy ball / Focus
blast / HP ice
- Explosion / Psychic / Thunderbolt / Giga drain
I think Gengar must know shadow ball and sludge
bomb no matter what. The two remaining moves are up to you and
believe me. All of them are fantastic and all of them work for
specific situations. So choose them wisely or switch them if
possible every time you face different opponents, it keeps
Gengar fresh. As you can see, this set works with a lot of
items, so you can choose between a standard special sweeper or a
hit & runner.
Gengar.
Nature: Timid (+ Speed, - Attack).
Equip: Petaya berry.
EV´s: 252 Speed, 129 Special attack, 129 HP.
- Shadow ball
- Sludge bomb
- Psychic / Thunderbolt / Energy ball / Focus
blast / HP ice
- Substitute
Use Substitute and let your berry activate, then
just sweep… Not much more to say about this one.
Gengar.
Nature: Timid (+ Speed, - Attack).
Equip: Black sludge.
EV´s: 252 HP, 252 Speed, 6 Special attack.
- Mean look
- Perish song
- Hypnosis
- Substitute
This is the perfect set against walls. But you
have to predict the switch, so you can trap it and let it die
slowly. Harder set to use because of this prediction factor, but
effective as well.
Gengar.
Nature: Adamant (+ Attack, - Special attack),
Jolly (+ Speed, - Special attack).
Equip: Liechi berry.
EV´s: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 6 HP.
- Sucker punch
- Shadow claw
- Fire punch
- Explosion / Focus punch
Physical sweeper Gengar is not common at all, so
your opponent will be very surprised and you’ll have some
psychological advantage. It is probably not as effective as the
special sweeper, but very decent as well.
When should I use this Pokémon?
I have like 12 trained Gengars, I have been using
Gengar since 1998 so you have my word; it is a competitive,
excellent special sweeper. One classic but changing Pokémon.
What should I use against this Pokémon?
Special walls as Blissey are pretty good against
Gengar. HP ghost Dugtrio will take it down in one turn, usually.
Bottom line:
I’m already working on your suggestions, so
please keep them coming as I want this to be the best section we
can make, and it won’t be possible without your feedback, thanks
for your greeting e-mails last week. And buy Smash Bros. Brawl
if you haven’t. It is a great game…
Rating:
3.7/5
