Hello Pojo Fans,

Poseidra Abyss, the Atlantean Dragon Lord ends our Atlantean/Mermail look this week with a huge upgrade to the Main Deck version of this card.

Needing three Level 7 monsters just fits given the artwork. Not as tough to do with Shadow Squad turning WATER stuff into Level 7’s for you, but also being able to use an Atlantean or Mermail Xyz Monster you control as an additional way of summoning. Likely not using yesterday’s CoTD because its effect is too good not to use at its fullest, however, Abysstrite using three materials for her Xyz Summon is a prime candidate. Once you’ve got Poseidra summoned, you can detach two materials and send a WATER from the hand or Deck to the Graveyard to spin three cards your opponent controls. The original Poseidra would spin back all Spell/Trap Cards on its summon, this is a better version of it. When you discard in the Atlantean/Mermail archetype you are likely getting something for your discard, so all you need to do is that double detach to spin back three. This is a break-even effect until your discard kicks in the grave to get you something, netting you a positive, and you are already taking a huge advantage on the board with the spin-back.

Once it hits the grave, Poseidra can Special Summon 3 Level 3 or lower Fish, Sea Serpent, and/or Aqua monsters from your hand or Graveyard. Much like how the spin-back effect is a different version this card’s predecessor, this effect is as well. Instead of needing 3 of those Types of monsters to summon Poseidra, you get to summon 3 of those Types. This effect essentially pays for the double discard and send to the grave from the hand or Deck. So much of both archetypes can be Special Summoned off of Poseidra’s second effect, and with it not needing to be sent to the Graveyard by your opponent, you can send Poseidra for an effect or another Extra Deck Summon to trigger this effect.

Usually a successor monster is better, but this monster FAR exceeds those expectations. Easily summoned, high ATK, upgraded spin-back ability, and pays you back materials used to summon it. This is a big new boss monster for the archetype and plenty of monsters to summon off its second effect that you are, once again, able to activate after you’ve spent up its spin-back ability. That effect coming after Abyssgaios’s Skill Drain will devastate the opponent.

We end the week off with a brand new Xyz for the Mermail Atlantean archetype: Poseidra Abyss, the Atlantean Dragon Lord.

Poseidra Abyss is a Rank 7 WATER Sea Serpent Xyz with 3000 ATK and 1800 DEF. More strong stats for a Rank 7, and we remain with WATER tying together with Sea Serpent. Materials needed are 3 Level 7 monsters, which you could do, or you can summon once per turn using any Atlantean or Mermail Xyz you control as material, with materials transfering of course. The only targets so far are Mermail Abyssgaios, a good Rank 7 that’s easy to make, and Mermail Abysstrite, an Xyz you’ll only ever summon off of Bahamut Shark and not with 3 Level 3 monsters. Soon we’ll have Abysstrite, the Atlantean Spirit as a Rank 7 you can use to help extend your combos and get you some more cards and then put this on top instead of having to use a good end board piece like Mermail Abyssgaios or use a Bahamut Shark just to summon Mermail Abysstrite. Once per turn, you can detach 2 materials from this card and send a WATER monster from your hand or Deck to the graveyard to return up to 3 cards the opponent controls to the hand. Non-targeting and non-destruction removal is great, especially when you can remove up to 3 cards while also triggering potentially multiple Mermail Atlantean effects off the detach and send from hand/Deck. If this Xyz Summoned card is sent to the graveyard, you can discard a card to summon 3 Level 3 or lower Fish, Sea Serpent, and/or Aqua monsters from the hand and/or graveyard. So a lot of times you’ll just summon this and Link it away to revive the 3 monsters to make more Synchro, Xyz, or Link monsters. 3 Level 3s is perfect if 1 of them is a Tuner so you can make Trishula and rip an opponent card from the hand along with the Moulinglacia you likely play to rip 2 other cards from the opponent’s hand. Poseidra Abyss is a good monster that’s thankfully easier to summon using other Mermail Atlantean Xyzs. It offers good removal beyond turn 1, and you can use it as a solid Link Material to revive a bunch of monsters to summon other cards from the Extra Deck. 1-2 is fine, the first copy for turn 1 to get more bodies and the other if you wish for later turns to clear the opponent’s board.

Garunix got a new Xyz form, so Poseidra gets one too! Capping off the week is a new (sub) boss for the Atlantean and technically Mermail archetypes. It’s a Rank 7 WATER Sea Serpent Xyz monster, as expected, though it’ll take a rather hefty 3 level 7 monsters to summon. Fortunately, its alternate summoning condition will let you Xyz Summon it once per turn with an Atlantean or Mermail Xyz monster and take its materials. Once we get the upcoming Abysstrite Xyz in Supreme Darkness, that’ll be one of the best ways to summon it, but until then, you can use Mermail Abyssgaios or the old Mermail Abysstrite if you get the chance to summon it. Statwise, it’s a small boost from the original Poseidra, getting 200 in both stats for a total of 3000 attack and 1800 defense– very solid attack, but the defense leaves a lot to be desired.

Poseidra Abyss comes with two other effects that mirror the original’s, with the first one oddly enough only being a soft once per turn effect. It’ll let you detach 2 Xyz materials to send any WATER monster from your hand or deck to the Graveyard (as cost), then return up to three of your opponent’s cards from the field to the hand. It’s obviously a strong boardbreaker effect as a non-targeting bounce, but its main purpose is as an extender! If you’re stumped, you can’t go wrong with sending Atlantean Dragoons since it’s not once per turn and you’ll likely have sent one earlier in the combo anyway. It’ll also be an easy way to trigger Atlantean Shadow Squad’s Graveyard effect if you haven’t used it yet. Losing two materials is a bit steep, but Poseidra probably won’t stick around for long anyway, because that brings us to its other effect, triggering if it’s sent to the Graveyard while Xyz Summoned to let you discard a card, then Special Summon 3 level 3 or lower Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monsters among your hand or Graveyard. This makes Poseidra Abyss an excellent combo piece, among other things, since you can bring out a Rank 3 monster like Xyz Armor Torpedo or LeVirtue Dragon. The latter, coincidentally, can give an Xyz material to Abyssgaios if you revive it with Abyss-Sting Triaina, which you can conveniently search with Mermail King – Neptabyss thanks to all of that Link fodder. I’m somewhat disappointed that it’s more of a combo piece than a boss, but I can’t really complain since it’s a very good combo piece, and if you really wanted to, you can play multiple copies to Rank Up Abyssgaios into another one on turn 3 and get rid of any stragglers on your opponent’s board.

+Potent combo effects that can extend and set up your endboard
+Triple bounce that can break boards or get rid of troublesome monsters
-Lacks real disruptive abilities on its own
-Requires good combo insight to use effectively
