This week has all been Throwbacks, but for Throwback Thursday, I chose Pot of the Forbidden.  Never reviewed, and I’ve wanted to do this for a while (I honestly don’t know why) but this is a Level 9, Earth/Rock, Flip Monster with 2000 attack and 3000 defense.  When Flipped, Pot of the Forbidden gives you the option of choosing one of four attached effects.

You get Pot of Greed which lets you Draw 2 cards
You can Giant Trunade the Field returning all Magic and Traps on to the player’s Hands
You can Raigeki your opponent destroying all their Monsters
You can Forceful Sentry your opponent, looking at their Hand and returning 1 card to the Deck (and shuffle)

This card has much versatility.  It’s honestly GREAT for Rock.  The Flip is fitting there, the variety of the effects (while can be easier to pull off with other cards, hence the cited examples) but you still get a 2000/3000 body here, which is useful in itself.  The mystery here is this card (as most are) is only going to help you as long as you keep it on the Field.

If you pull any effect off here, and can combo other effects from this card with other cards, say in the same turn, this makes this thing a lot more powerful.  It’s a Flip card that while not combo dependent, is better in combination with more cards.  This certainly is a more Fun card (could be an interesting Tech piece I suppose) but I still love it in Rocks.

Rating:  I give this a 4.5/5 in Rocks and a 2/5 elsewhere for a 3.25/5 average

Art:  4/5  The Pot is looking rather menacing, no?  I wouldn’t want to mess with that mouth, and the evil eye is intimidating too.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Pot of the Forbidden is our Throwback Thursday choice this week.

Powerful card, but playable not so much. Level 9 flip monster isn’t something that screams splashable or playable. If you somehow get it to the field and get that flip effect, you have an astonishing 4 choices. Depending on the situation, any may be applicable, however “Draw 2 cards” will always be on the table. In a top-deck war, shuffling a card back would be best. Against Altergeist or a backrow strategy deck like Sky Strikers, using the Giant Trunade effect would work. Clearing the board of monsters for an attack would be great, even if this monster only has 2000ATK (you’d use this effect first, then swarm the field if all went through). There are some cheesy combos with monsters that can make this more consistent. The “Jar Out” strategy can work with this as long as you can get it to the field (Reasoning, Monster Gate, Monster Reborn, etc.). Prediction Princess may be a spot for something cheeky like this as well with its flip-based strategy and this would suffice for a Ritual Summon cost.

Advanced-3/5     Art-4/5- That is horrifying

Like banned cards, well here we can technically review 3 at once (since Raigeki is legal now, it wasn’t in the OCG when this was printed). Here’s Pot of the Forbidden.

Pot of the Forbidden is a Level 9 EARTH Rock FLIP monster with 2000 ATK and 3000 DEF. Low ATK on a Level 9, but a very good DEF stat always. Rock and EARTH always go well together, and it can be common on these FLIP monsters. For its FLIP effect, it’s a hard once per turn because I mean… it’s the effects of some of the most powerful cards in the game, and I’ll go over them once each.

  1. Draw 2 cards. I kinda wanted to review Pot of Greed myself, but haven’t since it won’t likely make for a fun review. Draw 2 cards is so good that it’s been put onto many cards for years now, but nothing can ever capture the magic of Pot of Greed until we get a generic Draw 3 with no downside. Drawing 2 can be strong if you pull it off on here, it doesn’t make you go minus inherently, the only minus is whatever you might put in for summoning it, so a draw 2 makes up for that.
  2. Return all Spell and Trap cards on the field to the hand. So now we got Giant Trunade, which has allowed players to loop many cards like Call of the Haunted and the banned Premature Burial. On paper, it would of sounded worse than Heavy Storm and especially Harpie’s Feather Duster if it wasn’t for the abuse of certain Continuous or Equip Spells or Traps with the former until we get an actual Equip Trap. On here, I would of preferred if it had a Heavy Storm effect instead since this is likely harder to abuse with Call of the Haunted. I mean, I would of preferred Harpie’s Feather Duster more, but Heavy Storm is something I would of been fine with. I’ll accept a Giant Trunade though.
  3. Destroy all monsters your opponent controls. We reviewed Raigeki a little bit ago, and while it isn’t the perfect card anymore, it can still be a blowout against the right Deck. Imagine your opponent running into a 3000 DEF wall that will nuke their field, though. I doubt the opponent will attack a face-down monster you gave 2 tributes for though, and Special Summoning it face-down means you’d likely have to show it to the opponent. Still, at least this is an effect you don’t have to pick because you don’t want a field nuke for the opponent in some scenarios.
  4. Look at your opponent’s hand, also shuffle 1 card from the hand into the Deck. Finally we got The Forceful Sentry. Looking at the opponent’s hand is one thing, but also taking a card from the hand and throwing it back into the Deck is even more absurd, especially since it’s your choice. It will likely be harder to get to it from the Deck, assuming they don’t have a searcher for it. There’s many cards that can generically grab any card from the graveyard. The Forceful Sentry might never come back until players can go +25 every turn, but on this card it’s fine in the current metagame.

This is a great card to see how where you put effects matters. On genetically usable Spells, you get some of the most powerful cards in the game which most would stay banned for years unless they’re errata’d. On here, while it is still powerful, you’d probably need to build a Deck around it (Prediction Princesses) to get use out of it. In any other Deck that can’t take advantage of its monster qualities, it just makes that Deck much worse with a big brick considering we don’t like Tribute Summoning much anymore and setting monsters isn’t the best thing to do. It’s a good card, but only in the right home.

Advanced Rating: 3.5/5

Art: 4/5 It’s a sick looking Pot, not anything generic looking. Plus the creepy face is a great bonus.
