Professor Burnet (SW – Black Star Promos SWSH167) is a Supporter that lets you search your deck for two cards and then discard them. That’s right, she’s a massive nerfed version of Battle Compressor: two cards instead of three, and being a Supporter instead of an Item. Part of me understands why: Battle Compressor proved to be amazing when it was Standard-legal. For general usage, many decks benefited from it, as we used it to yank unneeded TecH, spare copies of other cards, or Supporters from our decks.
Of course, that last bit was only really a thing because of the even more amazing VS Seeker. Battle Compressor is why Night March flirted with being competitive even while the decks silver bullet counter, Lysandre’s Trump Card, was still legal. After Lysandre’s Trump Card was banned, Battle Compressor was a major part of why Night March became one of the dominant decks in the Standard metagame… and why it persisted even into the Expanded Format.
So… remember when we covered all those Pokémon V-Union cards? Yeah, Professor Burnet is not Battle Compressor, and even if she was, we have Crossceiver and not VS Seeker. Battle Compressor combos aren’t recommended. Tossing half the V-Union cards you need into your discard pile, though, that might be worth your Supporter. I’m not 100% sold, but I suppose relying on miscellaneous draw and search effects is a bit of a concern, as you’ll often need them not just to obtain the pieces, but more draw and search of the right variety (like Professor’s Research and Quick Ball) to rapidly discard your V-Union pieces.
As far as I know, none of the V-Union Pokémon have proven themselves, but the potential is just enough that Professor Burnet earns a two-out-of-five for Standard. Battle Compressor is still legal, so I’m giving her a one-out-of-five for Expanded. I’ll resist playing Create-A-Card, but I really think Professor Burnet needed to do more to justify being a Supporter and not an Item card.
