David Fanany Player since 1995 The only thing better than a clone is a steady stream of clones – particularly if you can hit something with a powerful comes-into-play ability. While there are a lot of six-mana options in constructed play, some of which are perhaps less situational, this guy is nonetheless an amazing headline card for a certain archetype of Commander deck: the one that combats the expensive, “staple”-heavy, EDHRec influenced monster by stealing or copying all of its cards. Constructed: 1/5 |

Another twist on the Clone effect, Progenitor Mimic’s unique wrinkle is a promise to take over the game if you give it enough time to do so. Six mana is more than the usual going rate for the effect, but getting even one additional copy makes this (usually) a worthwhile investment if you chose the right creature to copy. That’s a big “if” unless the creature has baked-in protection somehow; it’s like many clones in that it’s only as good as the best creature you can hit with it, and the upside can sometimes be rendered moot if you have to pick a legendary creature with it. Still, as far as cloning goes, you can do worse than this, and it can take over a game if given the space to do so. Constructed: 1.5 (six mana is way too much, and there’s not a lot to make this pop that can’t benefit other things more) |
