R-Genex Turing – #BLTR-EN012

During your opponent’s Main Phase, if you control a “Genex” monster (Quick Effect): You can Special Summon this card from your hand, then, immediately after this effect resolves, you can Synchro Summon 1 “Genex” Synchro Monster. You can only use this effect of “R-Genex Turing” once per turn. This card on the field can be treated as a Level 1 or 3 monster when used for a Synchro Summon of a “Genex” Synchro Monster.

Hello Pojo Fans,

R-Genex Turing starts a Genex week here on Pojo…gotta say, never thought we’d review this archetype, but it’s gotten new support.

Not sure something in the Genex archetype qualifies as a Spellcaster, but we’ll roll with it. Level 2 Tuner is always a good thing for archetypes that Synchro Summon. Special Summon ability combined with an immediate Synchro Summon ability during your opponent’s turn allows you to save a monster from an effect while keeping a body on board and enabling any effect(s) that happen when your new monster is Synchro Summoned. Genex restrictions are in place, so no Synchro Summoning anything outside the Genex archetype (balanced restriction). Flexibility with level changing from 1 or 3 if you choose when Synchro Summoning a Genex monster can help if you lose a monster or you just don’t have the levels. You can use this during your turn for a Synchro Summon outside the archetype, but with the ability to summon something like Locomotion R-Genex during your opponent’s turn and take control of their highest level monster to stop their plays. Or, if you have the same Attribute in the graveyard as a monster your opponent controls, Synchro Summon Friday’s card: Arms of Genex Return Zero to deal with it.

Most Genex Synchro Monsters do things on your turn, making this also something you could do in Main Phase 2 after your opponent has finished attacking. It is a good card to get on the field to keep a body there and set up for your next turn. It’s a shame more of the Genex Synchro Monsters don’t have Quick Effects, otherwise this card could’ve been better.

Genex are the second of the four Duel Terminal archetypes to get recent support, and it’s certainly one that needed the support more than most the other DT decks to finally just be playable. Let’s see what the Deck got starting with R-Genex Turing.

Turing is a Level 2 DARK Spellcaster Tuner with 600 ATK and DEF. Stats are whatever since it’s a Level 2 monster, DARK is great, Level 2 Tuners are nice, I just don’t know what here is a Spellcaster. Anyways, during the opponent’s Main Phase, you get a Quick Effect if you control a Genex monster to Special Summon this card from the hand and then immediately Synchro Summon a Genex monster. Best use for this mainly is to summon Locomotion R-Genex on the opponent’s turn to steal one of their monsters, which is pretty good. Otherwise, if you’re out of summons for the turn and don’t have a DARK to use to summon Locomotion, you can go into the new Genex Synchro, since all the old ones besides Locomotion are not worth playing at all. Hard once per turn, of course, also you can treat this as a Level 1 or 3 monster when used on the field to Synchro Summon a Genex Monster, so some breathing room to help summon Locomotion R-Genex or whatever other Synchro. It’s a fine card really. Does nothing on your turn, but can help you get an extra Synchro out on the opponent’s turn, which can really be beneficial depending on which one it is. Play a copy, you’ll likely search it out mid-combo.

This week starts our coverage of the latest zero-to-hero archetype from Terminal World, the illustrious Genex– starting with R-Genex Turing. Turing is a level 2 DARK Spellcaster Tuner monster, and can be searched by Genex Blastfan or R-Genex Magma since it’s part of the R-Genex subarchetype. Before you even think about putting it in Spright, Melffy Pinny is strictly superior, so stick with Genex for this guy. Turing predictably has a meager stat spread of 600 attack and defense, though that does make it searchable with Cupid Pitch if you wanted to do that.

While Turing is on the field, you can treat it as level 1 or 3 if you use it to Synchro Summon a Genex Synchro monster. Flexible level modulation is nice, especially in Genex where your combo lines can vary quite a bit depending on your starter, which can result in awkward level combinations for Synchro Summoning. Turing has a single hard once per turn Quick Effect to Special Summon itself from the hand during your opponent’s turn while you control any Genex monster, then immediately perform a Synchro Summon for a Genex Synchro monster. There are only two real targets for this: Locomotion R-Genex and the new Genex boss monster, as they’re the only Genex monsters that can provide disruption when being summoned on your opponent’s turn. In my experience, Turing itself isn’t strictly necessary since it’s not part of the legendary loop (more on that Wednesday), but it’s still very useful as a level 2 body, and more conservative combo lines will appreciate its flexibility. I recommend running one to two copies to taste!

+Level modulation is useful for accessing a wide variety of Genex monsters
+Enables Locomotion R-Genex as a disruption
-Very shallow pool of viable Quick Synchro targets
-Not very helpful for enabling the Genex loop

Art: 3/5 Well, it at least looks the part of a Genex, as a strange robot creature…
