R-Genex Undine – #BLTR-EN011

Once per turn: You can banish 1 “Genex” monster from your GY; this card gains that monster’s Attribute, then if you banished a Tuner to activate this effect, you can treat this card as a Tuner until the end of this turn. If you control a “Genex” Synchro Monster: You can target 2 “Genex” monsters in your GY, including this card; add them to your hand, also for the rest of this turn, any card sent to your GY is banished instead.

Hello Pojo Fans,

R-Genex Undine is a new version of the original Undine, which had a lot of success in Mermail because of its Foolish Burial ability.

For the new Undine, you get something stronger, higher Level (4 vs 3), and the ability to change Attribute. Banish a Genex to take that monster’s Attribute as well as take their Tuner status if they have one. The Attribute change helps if Undine is not the Tuner in the Synchro Summon for things like Genex Ally Triarm and Genex Ally Triforce where Attribute of non-Synchro Material Monsters matters for effects. Also, it can be the partner to Genex Controller in other Synchro Summons to match the Attribute needed for the Synchro Summon. Ally Axel and Return Zero don’t need such juggling of Attributes but R-Genex Undine is there to help smooth out the consistency of Synchro Summoning. You still need to have that Attribute in your grave for R-Genex Undine to banish though.

R-Genex Undine can return itself and another Genex to your hand from the grave as long as you have a Genex Synchro Monster on the field. This effect should almost always be used immediately after your Synchro Summon to ensure that you get the monsters you want back. Yes, it puts you under a Dimensional Shifter for the rest of the turn but if you activate this in Main Phase 2 there’s no harm in that. Adding back a Synchro Monster gets you that monster back to the Extra Deck, while you get this monster to change Attributes again. You can also pop back something like Genex Turning from yesterday to drop on your opponent’s turn, or R-Genex Overseer for a Level 6 Synchro Summon next turn.

While the first Undine put something in the grave to search out something, R-Genex Undine can retrive itself and something when in the graveyard, as well as change itself to help you Synchro Summon. It’s interesting to think that you can summon the original Undine to Foolish Burial this Undine, to search Genex Controller with the first, then, return this Undine and something else all for the cost of one summon…hope everyone followed that.

Next up we see the old toy for Atlantean Mermail get a retrain to actually try to help the archetype it’s built for: R-Genex Undine.

R-Genex Undine is a Level 4 WATER Aqua with 1700 ATK and 1100 DEF. Solid stats on a Level 4, plus the combo of WATER and Aqua is a standard one. Once per turn, you can banish a Genex monster from the graveyard to have this card gain that monster’s Attribute, then if you banished a Tuner, you can treat this as a Tuner til the end of the turn. The Attribute effect probably doesn’t matter as much unless you play specific Synchros like 90% of the old Genex Synchros that need monsters with specific Attributes, but that payoff usually isn’t worth it. Making this a Level 4 Tuner potentially is what you care about to help with the Synchro plays. The other effect triggers in the graveyard if you control a Genex Synchro, letting you target 2 Genex monsters in your graveyard, including this card, and add them to you hand, but for the rest of the turn any card sent to your graveyard is banished instead. The recovery is nice, and easy to trigger since Genex Ally Axel is usually a key part to some Genex combos, or you can get your boss monster out during your turn and recover this to continue plays. No HOPT in favor of banishing all your stuff instead does allow you to do it more than once per turn at least, but here it just ensures the same copy of Undine won’t go back to the graveyard for loops. It’s easy to get this in the grave as well with the original Genex Undine sending this to search for Genex Controller to use for your combo. Probably another card to play a copy of, as it does continue the Genex combo, but you don’t want too many in case you brick on it.

Genex Undine gets a (debatable) upgrade as R-Genex Undine, a level 4 WATER Aqua monster. R-Genex Crusher is the most practical way to search it, and while it might not be a combo juggernaut like the original, Undine still has its uses that we’ll get to later. Undine gets a straight lift of 500 to both stats from the original Undine for a total of 1700 attack and 1100 defense– not too shabby, but largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

The original Genex Undine was a combo master thanks to its generic WATER foolish effect, but this version discards that for a more Genex oriented kit. Undine’s first effect is a soft once per turn, letting you banish a Genex monster from your Graveyard to change Undine to that monster’s attribute; as a bonus, if it was a Tuner, you can make Undine a Tuner until the end of the turn as well. Like yesterday’s Turing, this is meant to help toolbox your array of admittedly disappointing Genex monsters, since they have attribute requirements that haven’t aged very well for how weak they are. Undine changing attributes helps in that regard, though frankly I don’t see a significant reason for it. In fact, losing fuel in the Graveyard for their new boss monster can be pretty harmful! Undine’s other effect is much more promising, a non-once per turn effect that can only be used if you control a Genex Synchro monster, letting you recycle Undine and another Genex monster in your Graveyard back to your hand at the cost of banishing any card sent to your Graveyard for the rest of the turn. While the self-inflicted Macro Cosmos will all but cut your combo lines short, this effect is still very useful for squeezing a little more out of your combos, especially when you get zinged by Hand Traps. Tomorrow’s card is enabled by anything that adds Genex monsters to your hand, so using Undine’s recycling effect can get the loop back into rotation, though your combo won’t last very long without your Graveyard. The new Undine isn’t as strong as the original, but for the new Genex strategy, it’s actually quite a bit better; I would run one copy at most though.

+Recycling effect can kickstart the new Genex loop after being disrupted
+Helps toolbox Genex Synchros
-Can rob you of your Graveyard which hurts their new boss monster
-On-field effect isn’t very impactful

Art: 2.75/5 Frankly I’ve always seen Undine as a little freaky, especially with her “thingies”, but I’m kind of glad she lost her legs…
