Raidraptor – Bloom Vulture – #PHNI-EN005

If you do not control any face-up monsters, other than Winged Beast monsters: You can Special Summon both this card and 1 “Raidraptor” monster from your hand. If you control no monsters: You can target 2 Level 4 or lower “Raidraptor” monsters in your GY, including this card; Special Summon them in Defense Position. You can only use 1 “Raidraptor – Bloom Vulture” effect per turn, and only once that turn, also you cannot Special Summon monsters the turn you activate either of these effects, except DARK monsters.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Raidraptors are back on CoTD with their new support. Been a while since we took a look at them and while the archetype isn’t meta, a few cards always pop up and become meta here and there for a bit. We’re starting this week off with Raidraptors – Bloom Vulture.

All these monsters are Winged Beast and DARK so we won’t have to go over that this week. Low ATK, high DEF for this Level 4 not carrying a Tuner ability. Bloom Vulture does have a double extender ability though when you don’t control any monsters or just Winged Beast, allowing it to start your turn without committing to a Normal Summon. Special Summoning two for having no monsters or just Winged Beast make Bloom Vulture an instant Link 2 at the worst. Blade Runner Falcon is a small Rank 4, but if your LP are 3000 or more below your opponent’s you can make it huge and it comes with a destruction ability after destroying a monster in battle…pretty good for a 1000ATK Rank 4.

Raidraptors have always been about making smaller Xyz monsters and then climbing using their Rank-Up Spells to get to their high Rank boss monsters. With the Xyz Summon you’d perform with Bloom Vulture and the Level 4 you summon off of it you’ll set yourself up for the Rank 6 Revolution Falcon or its Air Raid version through a Rank-Up Spell.

When Bloom Vulture is in the grave they can recover your resources if you are suddenly without monsters. Special Summoning it and another Level 4 or lower Raidraptor monsters in defense once again sets up a Link 2 at its worst. It’s not about if, but when your opponent takes down your field, so recovery is important and Bloom Vulture is all about setting up the field for the turn. You are able to use each effect in the same turn, making Bloom Vulture able to recover off a board-wipe effect that you might stumble into (does anyone play Torrential Tribute anymore?).

Raidraptors will swarm the field, that’s what the archetype is geared to do and Bloom Vulture fits in perfectly. Special Summon ability on your first turn, recovery ability for your field if you get blown out, and yet another way to get quickly into a Rank monster to utilize the Rank-Up Spells. Good start to the new support.

New Raidraptors got released to give the archetype a strong powerup, so this week we’ll look at some of those best cards starting with Raidraptor – Bloom Vulture.

Bloom Vulture is a Level 4 DARK Winged Beast with 300 ATK and 1900 DEF. A strong DEF stat for a Level 4, DARK is great, and Winged Beasts are full of support. First effect can be triggered if you don’t control any face-up monsters that aren’t Winged Beasts, letting you Special Summon this and any other Raidraptor from your hand. It’s a quick way to get 2 bodies on board to make Force Strix, Raider’s Knight, or Wise Strix. The other effect is a graveyard effect for if you control no monsters, letting you revive this and another Level 4 or lower Raidraptor monster, once again setting up the same plays previously mentioned, but this likely won’t come up as often since by the time you get the graveyard setup for it, you likely established your board. Still, only one effect a turn and only once that turn, also you can only Special Summon DARK monsters the turn you use either effect, which is still a good pool of monsters. Bloom Vulture does require other cards in the hand/grave, but it’s still a fast Rank 4 or Link-2 on its own without having to dedicate the Normal Summon to it. You do want to see this and another Raidraptor as soon as you can, so playing 3 doesn’t feel bad.

(If you are reading this in the future, this is a retroactive review!)

This week our Phantom Nightmare coverage continues with Shun’s lauded (and feared) Raidraptor support; Raidraptor – Bloom Vulture is first in line, a level 4 DARK Winged Beast monster, much like most Raidraptors. There are way too many searchers to name, but the only one you really have to remember is Raidraptor – Force Strix. Bloom Vulture has a horrendous 300 attack paired with a solid 1900 defense. Why do we keep talking about combo piece stats again?

Bloom Vulture bears the dreaded hard once per turn one per turn for its two effects, but fortunately the second effect isn’t very relevant on your first turn; more importantly, you’ll be locked into Special Summoning DARK monsters the entire turn you use either effect. That’s just fine since all of your important cards are DARK anyway. Bloom Vulture’s first effect will let you Special Summon both it and another Raidraptor monster from your hand as long as you control either no face-up monsters or only Winged-Beast monsters. This makes Bloom Vulture a much-needed consistency booster as long as you have another level 4 Raidraptor on-hand, and it’s insurance for when your Normal Summon inevitably gets zinged by a Hand Trap. Bloom Vulture’s other and much less relevant effect can only be used if you control no monsters while it’s in the Graveyard, Special Summoning both itself and another level 4 or lower Raidraptor from your Graveyard in Defense position. This effect is meant to be follow up if your opponent somehow manages to trounce your entire board, which is highly unlikely considering the bread and butter combo makes two powerful Towers monsters. The effect is also dead if they decide to leave any monsters (like, say, a jobber Wise Strix) alive, so I don’t think it’ll come up often. Overall, an excellent start to our support wave; I’d max out on three since at worst it can bait out negates for your other Raidraptor starters.

+Can kickstart Raidraptor combos without Normal Summon
+Extender in a pinch
-Can’t combo by itself
-Second effect almost never comes up
