If you weren’t previously familiar with Urza’s Legacy, Rayne’s text might remind you of a certain card from Strixhaven (more on that tomorrow!). If you were, it would have been the other way around, and you might also have been wondering where this ability was for all these years. Fortunately, it never went away in casual play, and it makes removing any of your creatures a very unattractive proposition. Getting Rayne into play before your opponent has a chance to target a very powerful threat creates an instant dilemma – and nowadays, she might be your commander, meaning that opponents can’t always go “Well, I’ll just target her first”.

She’s not much to look at initially, but Rayne can be quite frustrating if she gets entrenched. Removing her results in her controller (usually) drawing a card, and while the second part of it rarely matters, two cards are often better than one. But you’re usually playing her for the pseudo-Rhystic Study effect that can result in crazy card advantage over a couple of turns, thanks to it triggering off of spells and abilities alike. A bit slow for Legacy, Rayne’s certainly a force to be reckoned with outside of it.

Casual: 4.5
Limited: 3.5 (not sure what Urza limited looked like, but this being a “may” doesn’t hurt things)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander: 4.5
