Rebbec, Architect of Ascension – Commander Legends MTG Review

Rebbec is unusual in that her ability has you running to the card lists looking for cards that can destroy your artifacts, so you know which deck choices will gain protection from the most-played ones. I don’t know if it’s worth selecting every single card in your deck on that basis, though she can make a lot of artifact creatures incidentally unblockable, depending on exactly which creatures your opponents play, and the best-case scenario of your deck becoming entirely shielded to your opponent is very tempting. She’s probably not the type of card you just throw into every deck with artifacts, and it might take a little work to find the best use for her, but the ability is well worth keeping in mind (and is a good excuse to try adding white to the traditional blue and/or red artifact decks).

While most artifact decks tend to focus more in blue and red, Rebbec offers a pretty unique ability that hearkens back to the likes of Leonin Abunas from Mirrodin. The intrinsic thing is that this means each artifact has protection from itself, at worst, though this can scale really quickly into making an artifact army into an unblockable juggernaut if you have the right converted mana costs to play with. She definitely has an ability that can take some finesse to get right, but the applications are definitely impressive, and Rebbec having partner gives her some flexibility in being able to slot into lots of different decks; while her partner Glacian seems like a reasonable target, you don’t need to have the couple together all of the time.

Constructed: 1.75 (unlikely she makes a splash in Legacy, though there might be some room for her in Vintage, with its preponderance of powerful artifacts; I still would not bank on it, though)

Commander: 3.5 (the effect can be deceptively powerful, and there might be games where resolving Rebbec means “game over”)
