This is perhaps a deceptively good card. Those who have been playing long enough might note a similarity to Odyssey‘s Werebear, tweaked for specificity. It’s worth keeping in mind that you can get four creature cards in your graveyard in a dedicated self-mill deck or in a creature-based aggressive or midrange deck. That might also come earlier than seven general cards, especially if you’re not playing that dedicated self-mill deck. Mana producers that cost two mana themselves don’t get much play in the larger competitive formats, but they’re perfectly fine almost anywhere else – especially when they have a combat value beyond chump blocking.

A mana producer with late-game upside, Reclusive Taxidermist pairs a decent ability early with being a potential two-mana 4/4 in a late game that can still give you mana in a pinch. With a flexible mana cost and a nice spot on the mana curve, he proves a good turn two play that can pay off nearly immediately. Graveyard hate does hurt him a bit, but he can still generate mana effectively all the same, and sometimes that’s all you need.

Constructed: 3.25 (he does lack combat abilities, which isn’t ideal, but he might have a home if midrange takes over)
Casual: 3.5
Limited: 3.5
Multiplayer: 2.5
Commander: 2.75 (there are better mana producers at this spot on the curve, and I don’t think his upsides make him worth playing as a first or second choice)

In the right strategy this card works pretty well, first thing that comes to mind is a creature heavy deck which green works quite nicely in and the second would be a blue/green mill strategy but I don’t think there are other cards besides this that would truly utilize it. I think it ‘s fine overall, could come in handy in a pinch in limited that’s for sure. At the end of the day you get a universal mana dork for two mana which can help in multicolor decks. It’s not a bad card in the late game, you just need to either block a lot or have some type of sacrifice strategy, I should have mentioned sacrifice before and not mill…what was I thinking!? Hard pass in commander, let us be real for a minute here. You have about 60 cards in your commander deck that consists of land and commander staples and that leaves you around 40 cards to make your deck, you don’t want to waste it on this card.
