When I started attending that apparently vaunted institution, the local game store, Regrowth was restricted in Vintage. At the time, I didn’t understand why, especially since once my friends started showing me Vintage decklists, none of them had Regrowth in them. This turned out to be one of my first lessons about what is actually the most powerful weapon in the world: fear. Everyone was so afraid of the possibility of recurring a Time Walk or an Ancestral Recall, or using Fork to get back one of those plus another Regrowth to Regrow your Fork, that nobody was paying attention to what was actually going on. Now, plays like that can be game-winning, devastating, and perhaps format-warping in certain circumstances; there’s no doubt about that. But context is everything, and Regrowth is only as powerful as what is in your graveyard. Use it wisely.

Most green revival spells limit you to returning lands or creatures to your hand so it is noteworthy when a card like Regrowth has no restrictions. As a testament to the power of this kind of ability, Eternal Witness still sees a lot of play. Not to mention the price is right with Regrowth. It’s cheaper than Dirty and more splashable than Eternal Witness. Outside of a bad opening hand its hard to think of a situation where Regrowth wouldn’t be useful.

Regrowth is the most purely powerful version of its effect: two mana to recur any one card in your graveyard, no matter how big or small. This makes it as powerful as the best cards in your graveyard, and it thus pairs well with Dredge and other ways to load up your graveyard (like Entomb). The irony is that its power is too “fair” for most formats, since the power in cards is with casting them, not having them sit in your hand. Still, Regrowth is a casual staple for a reason, though most decks will rather run Den Protector or Eternal Witness over it for the body conjoined to the recursion.
