Reign-Beaux, Overking of Dark World – #SR13-EN001

You can Special Summon this card (from your GY) by returning 1 Level 7 or lower “Dark World” monster you control to the hand. If this card is discarded to the GY by card effect: You can add 1 Level 5 or higher “Dark World” monster from your Deck to your hand, except “Reign-Beaux, Overking of Dark World”, then, if this card was discarded from your hand to your GY by an opponent’s card effect, you can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower “Dark World” monster from your Deck or GY to either field.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Reign-Beaux, Overking of Dark World begins our Dark World week as the Structure Deck just dropped and gave the archetype a new lease on life. Always thought Dark Worlds had potential if given the right support and, while very VERY late, it is here now.

The Overking has assended past “Overlord” status he had previously, now upgraded with better effect(s) and stats. Pop a Level 7 or lower Dark World monster back to the hand to Special Summon him vastly outpaces his original Special Summon ability and is easily attainable in an archetype that does almost nothing but Special Summon. This Special Summon ability revolves around Reign-Beaux being in the grave, but with it now having a Level 8 instead of 7, you will find yourself discarding it to the grave for effects or using it as Trade-In fodder now that it has this effect.

Whenever Reign-Beaux Overking is discarded to the grave for a card effect you get a free high level Dark World search, netting you the bigger monsters like Grapha, Goldd, and Sillva. Normally this will be all you get from the discard as you’ll be using it through your own card effects, however, if your opponent forced your discard, or you used a card that changes your opponent’s card effect to you discarding, you’ll get a free Level 4 or lower Dark World Special Summon from the Deck. This isn’t as good, considering you want to discard cards like Snoww and Broww. It can Special Summon Beigge, one of your mid-ATK beatsticks, or Brron, who can help fuel your discarding when it does battle damage. Dark World Brainwashing and the new Fusion Monster we’ll cover this week are still the only Dark World cards that change effects that allow you to force your opponent to force a discard from you, triggering Goldd and Sillva’s better effects, as well as a pretty good add-on to Grapha’s effects as well. As will Dark World’s most of the time, the Special Summon of a high ATK monster is pretty good and almost always enough, and the archetype has played so long with Grapha being the only one to consistently do damage via its effect(s) that having a newer version of Reign-Beaux is a new lease on life.

Discard fodder, MUCH more playable, Grapha, Goldd, Sillva seracher, and could be a Special Summon of a lower Dark World monster, Reign-Beaux Overking is another useful powerhouse to join forces with Grapha.

The final week before the Top 10 is here and we’ll be looking at some of the cards from the new Dark World Structure Deck during this time, starting with a retrain of Reign-Beaux as he becomes the Overking of Dark World.

Reign-Beaux 2 is a Level 8 DARK Fiend with 3000 ATK and 1800 DEF. The ATK stat is very good, plus DARK and Fiend complement each other well. So first effect is similar to Grapha, where you can revive this from the graveyard by bouncing a Level 7 or lower Dark World monster, likely so you can’t loop other copies and Grapha together, but you at least get a 3000 body on board while also returning a Dark World to hand to trigger their discard effects again. Speeaking of discard effects, if this card is discarded by a card effect, you get to search for any Level 5 or higher Dark World that isn’t another Overking, then if it was discarded by an opponent’s card effect, you can summon a Level 4 or lower Dark World from your Deck or graveyard to either field. The first bit is good and mainly what you’ll be resolving more times than not, but if you get the 2nd effect, you can summon Ceruli to the opponent’s board to force you to discard to get the full power of another Dark World monster, or you can just summon something like Beiige, Snoww, or Broww to your board and bounce it to revive this thing. No HOPTs anywhere, similar to all of the old Dark World cards, which is nice to trigger all these effects more than once. Reign-Beaux is an outstanding card for Dark Worlds similar to Grapha, so running multiple copies of this does feel warranted, which is an upgrade to the original Reign-Beaux not really being ran at all.

Advanced Rating: 4/5

Art: 4.5/5 It’s nicer art, though it doesn’t look like Reign-Beaux changed much.

Looks like it’s Dark World week, something we haven’t looked at in a long time, and Monday gives us a strong, beefy retrain of an older Dark World Monster, in Reign-Beaux, Overking of Dark World.  Overking is Level 8, Dark/Fiend (delicious) with 3000 atk and 1800 def.  So he’s a force right out of the gate.  Special Summon from the Grave via returning a Level 7 or lower Dark World Monster you control to your Hand.  Say…like the original Reign-Beaux?  That would be quite the trick for your opponent to nuke him from your Hand, Special Summon it, get your Harpie’s Feather Duster/Raigeki, and then trade up for this guy.  Discard to the Grave by any Card Effect nets you a Level 5 or higher Dark World Monster from your Deck to your Hand, other than itself.  It’s a new spin (get it?) on Dark World, but I think a fun and useful one.  New abilities, new ways to work on and off the Field, and good synergy with the older Dark World Monsters.  Lastly, if sent to the Grave by an opponent’s Card Effect, you net a Special Summon of any Level 4 or lower Theme Monster from your Deck or Grave, to either Field.  That’s super useful too.  Plenty of these guys work and still get Effects regardless of who controls them, the door is open enough at any Level 4 or lower, and the options and versatility with each Effect is just wonderful.  Very solid card to open the week.

Rating:  3.75/5

Art:  4.5/5  While I think I prefer the original Reign-Beaux art, this is pretty nifty, and very evil and imposing.  Perhaps more appropriate than the prior art, but still cool absolutely.

This week we’re covering the newly-released Dark World Structure Deck, starting with Reign-Beaux, Overking of Dark World, a retrain of Reign-Beaux, Overlord of Dark World. Unlike its predecessor, it’s a level 8 DARK Fiend monster, so in addition to most DARK Fiend amenities, it can also be searched by Doomdog Octhros or Dark Spirit’s Mastery if you wish. It gets a decent stat boost as well, boasting a meaty 3000 attack but keeps the rather low 1800 defense.

Bizarrely, neither of Reign-Beaux’s effects are once per turn at all, though it does fit Dark World’s strategy which involves abusing non-once per turn effects to draw your entire deck. If Reign-Beaux is in your Graveyard, you can Special Summon it by returning a level 7 or lower Dark World monster from the field to your hand. Since it’ll be getting sent to the Graveyard by a myriad of ways, summoning it shouldn’t be particularly difficult. This comes with the added bonus of letting you reuse the bounced Dark World, like, say, Beige, Vanguard of Dark World. As typical of a Dark World monster, if Reign-Beaux is discarded by a card effect, you can search any level 5 or higher Dark World monster except another Reign-Beaux then, if it was by your opponent’s effect, you can Special Summon a level 4 or lower Dark World monster to either field from your Deck or Graveyard. There’s definitely a way to force the opponent to trigger, but we’ll get to that later this week. You’ll usually search Sillva, Warlord of Dark World with Reign-Beaux’s effect since it doesn’t need as much setup to summon as Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World, but searching Grapha itself or even the original Reign-Beaux (not recommended since it can brick) can come up. Overall, an excellent addition to Dark World decks and a good sign of what’s to come.

Art: 4/5 Maybe all fiends look the same to me, but doesn’t he kinda look like a Summoned Skull card? Sans the bones, of course.
