Old Magic has a lot of cards that seem weird by modern standards, to put it mildly. To be fair, when Magic was only a year old, the question of how the major untapping effects should be apportioned was a lot more open. And to be quite blunt, Reset was just not very good for quite some time. In 1994, I guess you could leave two mana open to bluff a single counterspell, but then untap a bunch more lands so you can counter three spells in one turn instead? High Tide came soon after it, and people soon realized that you could use them together to make lots of mana, but what were you supposed to do after that? The answer didn’t come for a while, 2003 to be exact; like you can say about a lot of Magic contexts, storm changed everything. And so Reset was in high demand for some variants of the deck, though it has tapered off somewhat since. If you do have access to it, it has some pretty innocuous uses too, and it’s a unique effect in blue. Since it’s easy these days to add green and get things like Prophet of Kruphix, it’s not always easy to justify a whole playset or what have you of a card like Reset, though it is pretty stylish and nobody will see it coming.

Just when your opponents thought they were safe-ish, Reset is there to say “no”. Or suggest the saying of it, at least. It’s not the most impactful spell on its own, but given that blue is the reactive color with reactive answers, pairing this with a fist full of spells to abuse it with can make for a surprising blowout. That said, Reset feels like a spell that’s more an enabler than anything, and sometimes you would just rather it be an answer. It’s a nifty piece of Magic‘s past, and Mystery Booster 2 marks its first reprinting since Legends, so there is that.
Constructed: 2.25 (not useless, but combos are a bit harder to protect, and yo’d rather just combo off on someone else’s turn)

Limited: 2.5
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 3.5
