Ryzeal Cross – Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day

Ryzeal Cross
Ryzeal Cross

Ryzeal Cross – #CRBR-EN009

You cannot Xyz Summon monsters with the same name as a card you control. You can target 2 “Ryzeal” cards in your GY, except “Ryzeal Cross”; place them on the bottom of the Deck in any order, then draw 1 card. You can only use this effect of “Ryzeal Cross” once per turn. Once per turn, when a monster effect activated by your opponent resolves, you can detach 1 material from a “Ryzeal” Xyz Monster you control, and if you do, negate that effect.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Ryzeal Cross is a combo Field Spell that gets you a draw, gets you back stuff from your grave, and opponent interaction…as long as you have an Xyz for that last one.

Limiting you from Xyz Summoning a monster that you already control on the field is a way to prevent you from going for multiple Ryzeal Xyz Monsters to have several materials on each, but you can just do that and then play Cross. Ryzeal Cross can pop back any two Ryzeal cards from your grave to the bottom of the Deck and then you get a draw. You are sure to never run out of copies of your Ryzeal monsters because of it, and cycle back any Xyz Ryzeal monsters if you lose them.

Good start to the Field Spell, especially since that is once per turn. Pretty sure any player will take an Upstart Goblin effect off their Field Spell combined with getting back stuff they’ve played. Anyways, onto negation. This negation ability would be balanced if not for the effects of the Ryzeal Xyz Monsters in conjunction with this card. Negation without destruction and only monster effects limits Ryzeal Cross from doing a full-on negation’s job like how Solemn Strike or Solemn Judgment do. However, one of the Ryzeal Xyz Monsters can detach to destroy a card on field when the opponent activates anything. That monster also can detach to prevent Xyz Monster destruction via detaching a material. The other Ryzeal Xyz is more about searching and overwhelming your opponent, but can still be a place-holder for Cross to function. The main issue is that first Xyz getting spot removal on field while you are negating a card. Monster effects are the first line of offense and defense in the game, and while Spell/Trap cards can be played, if any attempt to destroy an Xyz Monster, that first Ryzeal Xyz is going to get a spot removal and negate the effect of that destruction card.

For an archetype that will fill out its Main Deck with engine pieces and hand traps, Ryzeal Cross is a great way to get their archetype stuff back into the Deck while getting you something as well. It doesn’t search out a Ryzeal card once per turn, so it could’ve been far worse for opposing players. However, if your opponent can set up one of their Ryzeal Xyz Monsters (especially the first one, Friday’s CoTD), they are going to be popping stuff on your field while stopping your monster effect(s)…but at least it won’t destroy the monster getting negated (that’s for Detonator to do).

Midweek gives us an archetypal Field Spell for Ryzeal with Ryzeal Cross.

Ryzeal Cross is a Field Spell that prevents you from Xyz Summoning monsters with the same name as monsters you already control, which you can get around by summoning your monsters before playing this or using Eclipse Twins to get them off the field to summon new copies, but the only monsters you play in the Extra Deck for Ryzeal that are in multiples are the archetypal Xyzs, as the rest are 1-of toolbox options that are up to you. You can target 2 Ryzeal cards in your graveyard, besides Ryzeal Cross, and return them tot the bottom of the Deck for a draw. A very small Pot of Avarice effect is nice, get 2 Ryzeals back in the Deck to try to make plays again and you get a draw for a hand trap or another play enabler. That effect is a HOPT, and the other is a soft once per turn where if a monster effect activated by the opponent resolves, you can detach a material from a Ryzeal Xyz you control to negate that effect. Simple negation is good enough to play around a hand trap like Nibiru so you can keep making Rank 4s, as well as stopping the opponent’s plays on their turn. Ryzeal Cross is a good Field Spell for the archetype for its recovery potential and monster effect negation. The restriction isn’t that big of a deal with the ways you can get around it. It’s searchable off Ryzeal Duodrive, which you consistently summon enough to where you only need 1 of this, but you can run more in the Main or Side if you really want.

Advanced Rating: 4/5

Art: 3/5 It’s a big engine, that’s it.

In a rare moment of ingenuity for the deck, Ryzeal Cross is today’s card, functioning as their premiere Field Spell. The main way you’ll get to Cross is through Ryzeal Duo Drive, since the only thing the Main Deck monsters can’t do is search their backrow, funnily enough. Cross has a bizarre restriction of preventing you from Xyz Summoning another copy of an Xyz monster you already control, which sounds rather silly, but it does come up on rare occasions because you sometimes want to summon their boss monster multiple times. Cross has a hard once per turn effect to put two Ryzeal cards (except another Cross) in your Graveyard on the bottom of the deck to draw one card. It’s a basic recycling effect that helps get back your Xyz monsters or refuel Ice and Ext Ryzeal, outlasting your opponent (especially when combined with Fiendsmith’s spectacular recycling abilities). Cross’s final effect is the big one, a soft once per turn effect that triggers when your opponent resolves a monster effect, letting you detach an Xyz material from one of your Ryzeal monsters to negate that effect. While rare, disruptions baked into Field Spells have traditionally been quite strong, as seen with Tearlaments and Primeval Planet – Perlereino; it’s even more welcome for Ryzeal since the deck otherwise has no in-house negates on their monsters (though tomorrow’s card certainly doesn’t hurt). Since Ryzeal’s actual boss monster wants to hog materials, this is a convenient way to get rid of surplus materials on Duo Drive, so it’s not total deadweight! As this is not a ROTA, ironically enough, and can’t recycle itself, most people are fine playing one copy to search with Duo Drive. Gotta have more tech space!

+Adds another layer of disruption to the Ryzeal endboard
+Recycles your main playmakers and boss monster
-Restriction can be slightly annoying in pure builds
-Only hits monster effects

Advanced: 4.25/5
Art: 2.5/5 It looks fine, but what screams Ryzeal about this? I guess it kinda looks like Detonator’s shoulder.
