Hello Pojo Fans,

Ryzeal Detonator should be named “Ryzeal Diabolical”.

The Xyz I referenced several times this week, Detonator is the second of two Ryzeal Xyz Monsters you may summon in the turn, but make no mistake, it is the one you want to end on. Needing more than two Ryzeal Monsters, Detonator can spot removal at the cost of a material attached to it. This effect can only be in response to an opponent’s card or effect, making you think it will be a -1 for you in total. On its own, yes, but with Ryzeal Cross you are getting a material detached from Detonator to negate the effect if it is a monster, then Detonator is blowing something up. If you are going to lose Detonator outright then you are getting your 1-for-1 off this effect.

When Special Summoned (like when Xyz Summoned), Detonator will attach a monster in your grave as material, giving it at least three to begin with. This doesn’t have to be a Ryzeal, and, with likely using Ice Ext Ryzeal to summon Detonator, you most likely have Mereologic Aggregator in your Graveyard, which means it can be attached, then detached for Detonator’s abilities and still get you a face-up negation of a card.

To wrap up Detonator’s dominance on field, it gets a detach material to prevent destruction by battle or card ability for an Xyz Monster. So…Detonator attaches another material off its Special Summon (3 materials off first summon at least), spot removal 1-for-1 ability in response to a card or effect of your opponent’s, and can protect itself and any Xyz you control from battle and card destruction via detaching a material…this is all without combining it with Ryzeal Cross which will cover monster negation through detaching a material off one of your Ryzeal Xyz Monsters.

All of Detonator’s power does hinge on it having the materials to pay for these abilities, and you can still end up not having enough, but that isn’t very likely. Three materials attached with one of them being ( Mereologic Aggregator) gives you a guaranteed negation with Aggregator, and then up to three spot removal, protection, or monster negation through Ryzeal Cross, or any combo of the three. Almost forgot, it’s a 3000ATK Rank 4. Don’t care that is central to only Ryzeal, it is a 3000ATK Rank 4, making it one of the strongest vanilla beater you will ever have in a competitive deck if you run out of materials. The archetype has its strong boss monster, synergy throughout its archetype, flexibility to work with toolboxes, and is consistent. Yikes to all not playing it.

The Xyz archetype of course gets its own Xyzs, so we end the week with the boss monster for the Ryzeal archetype: Ryzeal Detonator.

Detonator is a Rank 4 LIGHT Pyro Xyz with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF. Titanic stats for a Rank 4 monster, but the LIGHT/Pyro combo is still odd. Materials are any 2+ Level 4 Ryzeal monsters, so locked to Ryzeal, but not hard to summon. When your opponent activates a card or effect, you get the Quick Effect to detach a material from this card to target a card on the field and destroy it. No negation, but it also isn’t a HOPT, so you can keep destroying the opponent’s cards to slow their plays down and stop the opponent from getting Continuous and Field Spell effects that trigger on activation. The remaining effects on this are each HOPTs, though, first letting you attach any monster from your graveyard to this card as material on Special Summon, which can get the Xyz Monsters with grave effects you sent with Ext Ryzeal. The other effect would detach a material from itself to prevent an Xyz Monster(s) destruction via battle or effect, so some protection for your board at least. Detonator is a strong Rank 4 for its first effect not having any once per turn on it, slowing the opponent’s plays down. The other effects are nice for getting more materials and protecting your board as well. 2 is standard for Ryzeal, and it’s nice if you get both up, but you could run 3. You can even run a small Ryzeal engine of Ext and Sword with a copy of this if you want in Decks that don’t use the Extra Deck that much.

We’re closing the week with the official boss of the Ryzeal archetype, Ryzeal Detonator, quite possibly the third most hated Rank 4 monster in the game after Bagooska and Abyss Dweller. Detonator is a Rank 4 LIGHT Pyro Xyz monster, taking any 2 or more level 4 Ryzeal monsters, so it is absurdly easy to bring out considering how efficient the deck is. Its stats are also absurd for a Rank 4, with 3000 attack and 2500 defense rivaling classical boss monsters; you can even pump it up a little more with Ryzeal Duo Drive, so offensive presence isn’t a huge deal in this deck.

Detonator’s first effect, which oddly enough is not once per turn, is a Quick Effect that triggers whenever your opponent activates a monster effect, letting you detach a material to target and destroy any card on the field. I foolishly underestimated this effect, as classically, reactive removal that doesn’t negate usually doesn’t make for a great boss monster. However, it’s proven to be an extremely effective disruption this format, given that it basically negates Field Spells and Continuous Spells because of how they work, and the fact that Detonator usually has 3 or more materials means you can often simply clear all of your opponent’s monsters without a single negate. Speaking of which, Ryzeal Cross usually has that covered! Detonator’s second effect is hard once per turn, triggering if it’s Special Summoned to attach any monster from your Graveyard to itself as material. Very simple, but deadly since it gives you another pop. Finally, also on a hard once per turn, Detonator can detach an Xyz material from itself to protect an Xyz monster from being destroyed by battle or card effect. It’s just there to make it just a bit more annoying to get rid of, and it’s better than no protection at all, though it doesn’t matter too much since it’s pretty easy to just recycle Detonator or summon another one. Detonator by itself is reasonably strong, but the key to Ryzeal’s power is its efficiency. You’re never dealing with just Detonator, as it’ll almost always be flanked by Cross and the myriad of Hand Traps the deck tends to run. Fiendsmith hybrids can also plop Fiendsmith Desirae and generic Link monsters for more disruption at the cost of being more vulnerable to anti-Graveyard effects. Furthermore, any leftover Ryzeals can be turned into Abyss Dweller or Traptrix Rafflesia to get more disruption, as well as Bagooska in matchups where you’re certain it’ll lead to an easy win. Still, I see Detonator as a very fair boss monster on paper, so while hitting it is largely meaningless because of Ryzeal’s recycling ability, I don’t expect it to get hit. Hybrid builds will probably only need 1 or 2 copies, but pure builds often opt for 3 just in case.

+Multiple pops per turn can easily dismantle decks
+Easy to make alongside additional disruptions
-Reactive destruction isn’t too great and can be bad in some matchups
-Extremely weak to backrow-heavy decks and boardbreakers
