Scarred Dragon Archfiend – #SDCK-EN049
1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner DARK monsters
This card’s name becomes “Red Dragon Archfiend” while on the field or in the GY. If this card is sent from the Monster Zone to the GY: You can Special Summon 1 “Red Dragon Archfiend” from your Extra Deck (this is treated as a Synchro Summon), then, if this card was sent to the GY as Synchro Material for a DARK Dragon Synchro Monster, you can destroy all Attack Position monsters your opponent controls. You can only use this effect of “Scarred Dragon Archfiend” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,
Scarred Dragon Archfiend ends our look at Red Dragon Archfiend stuff and is a good addition to the archetype.
Pretty much a generic Level 8 Synchro, minus the DARK monster needed alongside any Tuner. Taking the name of the sire of the archetype lends it all the support the original gets, as expected to be included in the archetype. Replacing itself with Red Dragon Archfiend in the Extra Deck is an acceptable trade, even if RDA’s ability isn’t as applicable as it used to be.
Using Scarred as part of a DARK Dragon Synchro does allow you to wipe your opponent’s attack monster off the field. A reverse of Red Dragon Archfiend’s ability is more useful in today’s game, and with 12 choices to choose from for Synchro Summons, you aren’t likely without options. Bystial Dis Pater, Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss, Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Bane, and Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity are the best options if you have the ability to get to them using your Scarred as material. Likely wiping the field clean and leaving a monster with more than 3000ATK on the field can be an OTK in itself, but then each of those monsters can gain you advantage while on the field. Bystial can control the field through negating your opponent’s monster effects, while Bane can rush the field with a Red Dragon Archfiend and then get you two Tuners all in the same turn.
Scarred isn’t meant to be a final monster when you Synchro Summon it, it is meant to be a rung for synchro climbing. 10 and 12 are the easiest to make to activate Scarred’s effect to clear out all attack monsters your opponent has, which 9 times out of 10 will be their whole field. What you do with what you have on the field is up to you, but you are sure to do some serious damage after this card’s effect kicks in, or end the game right there.

The week ends off with a new form of Red Dragon Archfiend to join the arsenal: Scarred Dragon Archfiend.
SDA is a Level 8 DARK Dragon Synchro with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF, so same stats except a 500 DEF stat boost. Materials are any Tuner and any non-Tuner DARK monster(s), so more specific to certain strategies. Its name becomes Red Dragon Archfiend while on the field or in the graveyard, which has its useful purposes. The only real effect this does have is when it’s sent from the Monster Zone to the graveyard, you get to summon a Red Dragon Archfiend from the Extra Deck (treating it as a Synchro Summon), then if it was sent to the graveyard cause you summoned a DARK Dragon Synchro, you can destroy all Attack Position monsters the opponent controls. A great effect for being used as Synchro Material to summon your bigger Dragons while also being able to wipe the opponent’s field. The Red Dragon Archfiend is good to make a second big Dragon Synchro if you don’t want to keep it, especially since you got ways to revive it later on if you don’t want to get this back. Hard once per turn on this effect is fair. Scarred Dragon Archfiend is pretty solid for being a part of your Synchro ladder to make more Synchros with what you get off its effect. You can use 1-2 of this alongside 1-2 of the original to get all the big Dragons you need.

It’s not often that a feature card is a combo piece rather than a boss, but we’ve got one today; closing the week is a new miniboss for Red Dragon Archfiend, Scarred Dragon Archfiend (mind the pun), a level 8 DARK Dragon Synchro monster just like the original. Unlike the original, Scarred takes a Tuner and any number of non-Tuner DARK monsters, so while it is less generic, it’s still absurdly easy to make in the deck proper, as well as in most Synchro decks with DARK monsters. Scarred retains the original’s solid 3000 attack but gets a decent boost of 500 defense for a total of 2500, so you can feel a little less guilty about Lightning Storm-proofing.
Scarred’s name is treated as the original Red Dragon Archfiend’s name while on the field or in the Graveyard, so it’s a valid attacker for Crimson Gaia’s flip effect and, if you don’t have another name that mentions Red Dragon Archfiend, it’ll fulfill the requirements for Red Zone twice over as well. Scarred’s sole hard once per turn effect triggers if it’s sent from a monster zone to the Graveyard, letting you Special Summon the original Red Dragon Archfiend straight from your deck then destroying all of your opponent’s Attack Position monsters as a bonus if it was sent there as a Synchro material for a DARK Dragon monster. The intent of this effect is likely to set up a total board wipe by blowing up Attack Position monsters then finishing off the Defense Position stragglers with the original, but the more potent application is to Synchro climb with Scarred and use the original as a combo piece as well. With your bread and butter combos, you can use Crimson Resonator to bring out Synkron Resonator or any level 2 Resonator, letting you turn that Red Dragon Archfiend into Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Abyss or Bystial Dis Pater. If you’re not confident in having a Red Dragon Archfiend name on the board for Red Zone, you can also summon Hot Red Dragon Archfiend Bane, which can extend even more by reviving Scarred. The nuke is a nice bonus, especially if you use it as follow up after reviving Scarred. While I’m still somewhat disappointed by the lack of a true new boss, Scarred makes up for it by being an exquisite combo piece. Run at least one, but don’t forget to also play a copy of the original.
