Scourge of the White Forest

Scourge of the White Forest – #ROTA-EN056

Tribute 1 Synchro Monster, then target 1 face-up card on the field; negate its effects (until the end of this turn), then if you Tributed a “White Forest” Synchro Monster to activate this effect, you can Special Summon 1 Illusion monster from your GY. If this card is sent to the GY to activate a monster effect: You can Set this card. You can only use each effect of “Scourge of the White Forest” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Scourge of the White Forest is the first Quick-Play Spell for the archetype.

Tributing a Synchro Monster isn’t something that I’d normally do. You invest in summoning one, even if you don’t invest a lot or if it was made very easy (like in White Forest), but you’d normally not want to tribute it unless it was for an even better effect. Scourge allows you to tribute any Synchro Monster you’ve got to negate a card on the field for the turn as the bare minimum effect it has. Not bad, especially if you are attempting to push through an effect and can afford the loss. However, Scourge will trade that monster for an Illusion Monster in your Graveyard if it was a White Forest Synchro Monster you tributed.

You could Special Summon back Diabell, Queen of the White Forest with Scourge’s effect as she is an Illusion Monster. Outside the White Forest archetype, there’s plenty of Illusion-Type monsters to Special Summon. Those you are likely running alongside White Forest cards though are the Azamina Fusion Monsters (these will be your primary targets with Scourge), Diabellze, Nightmare Apprentice (and any Main Deck Illusion you’d play alongside her, like Diabellze), and Silhouhatte Rabbit, the awesome Link 2 that is your Continuous Trap’s best friend. You have options, but the Azamina monsters are what you are meant to bring back with this effect. Resetting this card if sent to the grave for a monster effect ensures you are making a 1-for-1 a 0-for-1.

Requires a little setup (1 White Forest Synchro, 1 target in the grave, this card), but White Forest can Synchro Summon fast and all it takes is one Azamina Fusion Monster and you are set. You likely won’t be resetting this card because you’ll use it most of the time, but it is nice that it has that extra effect to help it become less and less a dead draw if you don’t have the setup. On the flip side, there’s a lot of basic negation power in the game that can function quicker than this. Players choice on this one.

We continue adventures into the White Forest with a new Spell to support the archetype: Scourge of the White Forest.

Scourge is a Quick-Play Spell that lets you tribute a Synchro Monster to target a face-up card on the field and negate its effects until the end of the turn, then if it was a White Forest Synchro you tributed, you can summon any Illusion monster from the graveyard. Sacrificing a Synchro is fine with White Forest when the Level 4 Tuners can put them back in the Extra Deck to revive themselves, especially if you’re sacrificing it to negate an important card. Reviving an Illusion becomes more important with the Azamina support that boosts White Forest as well, since otherwise your targets are Diabell and the Azamina Fusions if you opt to play them in current White Forest. If this card is sent to the graveyard to activate a monster effect, you can set it back to the field, which is useful for the costs of your White Forest effects. HOPT on each effect is fine. Quick Effect negation is pretty solid for White Forest to be able to search, even if it costs a Synchro on the field, but that’s fine with your smaller White Forest Synchros. It’s also another Spell that recovers itself after being used for your White Forest cards. It’d be a fine 1-of for the Deck.

While it’s not the bombshell card from the next set, White Forest still gets a bone with Scourge of the White Forest, a Quick-Play Spell you can grab with Silvy of the White Forest or Rciela, Sinister Soul of the White Forest. Scourge comes with two hard once per turn effects; on activation, it’ll let you tribute any Synchro monster to target and negate any face-up card on the field until the end of the turn. As a bonus, if you tributed a White Forest Synchro monster, you can Special Summon an Illusion monster from your Graveyard as well. It’s a solid negate that can make use of Silvera, Wolf Tamer of the White Forest after you summon it for its flip disruption, and if you’re playing an Azamina hybrid (as you probably should) it can revive your Azamina Fusions as well, giving you even more ways to bring back Azamina Ilia Silvia. Scourge’s other effect triggers if it’s sent to the Graveyard as cost to activate a monster’s effect, letting you (shocker) set it directly to your backrow. Pretty much every White Forest backrow does this for good reason, and while it stinks that you can’t use it immediately due to Scourge being a Quick-Play Spell, it’s still nice to provide more fodder for your White Forest combos. It’s the best search option for a disruption, especially if you have Silvia in your Graveyard as part of your combo, though it does kind of compete with the other White Forest backrow you want to search, like Woes of the White Forest. Still, for now at least you’ll want to run one copy. Even though it’s not a disastrous card to open since it’s good as discard fodder, I wouldn’t risk it considering tributing a Synchro monster is rather steep.

+Targeting negate that can potentially revive another negate in Ilia Silvia
+Great discard fodder like many other Diabellstar lore backrow
-Requires a Synchro tribute to use and needs a solid Illusion monster in the Graveyard for its full potential
-Not a great card to open
