Scrap Wyvern – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Scrap Wyvern was needed for the Scrap archetype, which used to be really good long long ago.

Good stats and exclusive to the Scrap archetype, I think being a Machine-Type would have been much more appropriate, now it lacks the support the archetype gets. A mini Scrap Dragon effect helps you gain advantage through the Scrap effect(s), or allows you to clear out cards that have fulfilled their purpose. You can also reborn the Scrap monster and pop it just to gain its effect again, something I’m sure will happen with Beast and Recycler. Wyvern’s first effect triggers its second effect. Searching off destruction alongside a pop on the field of any card gives this card a one-two punch of offensive power. You can search with Beast or Recycler off popping it, then you can summon another Scrap from your deck, thinning it, then get rid of an opponents resource. In total, if you pop the monster you bring back you will +2 at the end of it all and have Wyvern and another Scrap monster on the field. This card single-handedly has upped the offensive capabilities of Scraps and eliminated the need to run cards that would force you to play to destroy your own Scrap monsters.

The only downside to this card seemed to be the Type and the link points. With Master Rule 5 coming, that latter negative doesn’t matter.

We now look at the two Link Monsters you can get from these Special Editions with the first one supporting an archetype that hasn’t seen any new cards since 2014’s Primal Origin, so here we have Scrap Wyvern.

Scrap Wyvern is a Link-2 EARTH Dragon with 1700 ATK and arrows pointing Down and Left. The ATK is perfectly fine on a Link-2, being EARTH is solid and being a Dragon is nice, even though Scraps are full of different Types, and those arrows do synergize with Scraps since they can revive this. The summoning requirements are any 2 monsters, including a Scrap monster, which means you could throw a Scrap engine into a Deck possibly to make this work in there. Just don’t force Scraps into a Deck they won’t synergize well with. The first effect is to target a Scrap monster in your graveyard, Special Summon it, then destroy 1 of your cards. This is great for the archetype to get more revival and more ways to help trigger cards like Scrap Factory. Can’t summon Scrap Recycler with this and then use its effect though since the destroying a card of yours will make it miss the timing, but you can revive a Scrap Golem and then revive the Recycler. You can also get a Synchro like Scrap Dragon or Scrap Twin Dragon out of the grave with this. The other effect of Scrap Wyvern, though, is also like Scrap Factory where if another face-up Scrap monster you control is destroyed by a card effect while you control this card (save for during the Damage Step), you can Special Summon a Scrap monster from the Deck and then destroy any card on the field, yours or the opponent’s. More Deck summoning is great for this archetype to help get to their Synchros or any other plays they could possibly make. Your cards should be destroyed by effects fairly often in Scraps as well. The first effect of this card can also trigger the second since it requires you to destroy one of your cards. I also like how summoning from the Deck can also let you destroy your opponent’s card for some reason, so some removal is great. Both effects are a hard once per turn, mostly so Scraps don’t get too much swarming. It’s a fairly good card in pure Scraps or any Deck that would want to consider some Scrap monsters like how Orcust does.

Scrap Wyvern is new Scrap support, and a Link Monster as we enter midweek.  This is a Link 2, Dragon, Earth type Monster, with 1700 attack with arrows pointing to the direct bottom and left of this card.  Link Summon here is performed by any two Monsters, one of which must be a Scrap Monster.  Dragons have insane support these days, so that helps on this card too.

So, you can Target and Special Summon a Scrap Monster from your Graveyard, and then destroy one card you control.  Which also fits into the already established Scrap theme.  If another Scrap Monster is destroyed by Card Effect (save during the Damage Step) and not by Battle, which irritates me, you can Special Summon a Scrap from your Deck and then destroy one card on the Field.

Getting a Monster for free when losing one is good replacement, and then you get to destroy a card as well, so that’s a +1 in your favor.  As said, I don’t like that isn’t in Battle, that it has to be by Effect.  Cause it means your opponent can outright destroy your Monster in Battle and you get nothing.  But having said that, this is a great card for the theme.  Strong enough on its own, and it does a lot of awesome things.

Art:  4/5  It’s a mechanical Dragon alright.  This is fairly bland, but it actually works for me.  I like the mist in the background a lot.
