To every thing there is a season, and the season where the red member of a cycle was just “deal damage, or deal a different amount of damage” is long past. I do think it’s interesting that just as Lorwyn brought the original commands, another cosy fantasy set has a notable variation on them. Somehow, Season of the Bold manages to have even more options than most commands do, especially considering it theoretically has a limited currency of sorts. In suitably red fashion, it gives you interesting things for following your emotions and going to extremes: choosing the first mode five times rivals any green super-ramp spell for Commander, and choosing the second one twice is as close as red will ever come to Tidings. The one you really want to exploit is the third option, because it just begs for combos and synergies; I personally know at least one person who will be tempted to combine it with kobolds, but really that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Cards like this are very easy to underestimate, so I’d advise being ready for it starting now.

The red member of the Seasons cycle, Season of the Bold is less focused on burning something to death and more focused on enabling a massive turn, though it does help with the whole “burn things dead” thing. You can either get a massive injection of mana, a reasonable injection of cards, or get free Shocks to dump on creatures…or you can mix and match as the case suits you. One notable thing is that the second and third effects have an “until the end of your next turn” rider, so you can use this to set up for a massive explosion instead of needing to make this part of it.
Season of the Bold isn’t the showiest card on the block, but it is plenty potent, and stringing together a bunch of spells in one turn can obliterate a board with that third mode. It makes for a good way to cut a board down, but it also can help you get the gas you need if you’ve run out. As I always say, flexibility in a card matters a surprising amount, and this does just about everything that red could want: help it dig out cards, help it cast spells, or make those spells hit harder.
