– #INCH-EN027

When this card is Normal Summoned: You can add 1 “Evil Eye” card from your Deck to your hand, except “Serziel, Watcher of the Evil Eye”. While this card is equipped with “Evil Eye of Selene” (Quick Effect): You can target 1 Special Summoned monster your opponent controls; destroy it. You can only use this effect of “Serziel, Watcher of the Evil Eye” once per turn. Once per turn, during the next Standby Phase after this effect was activated: Destroy 1 card you control.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Serziel, Watcher of the Evil Eye may be the best of the four Evil Eye main deck monsters.

The searcher of the archetype, Serziel nets you a free search upon Normal Summon, something every archetype likes to have. The archetype has many options, and aside from itself, Serziel will get you what you want from the deck. Once you’ve got the Evil Eye of Selene on it, you can pop a Special Summoned monster each turn. The drawback though is pretty steep: destroying a card you control each Standby Phase after this effect activates is a hefty cost to pay. Control means on the field, if it meant in hand as well then we may not have a problem, as you could combo with several cards that don’t care how they are destroyed. Of the archetype-specific cards, there are only two that give you back resources upon destruction: Evil Eye Domain – Pareidolia (your field spell), and your Continuous Spell Evil Eye Repose. You could also destroy your own Evil Eye of Selene, then return it to the field with its own effect during your turn, but your monster(s) lose their secondary effect when Selene isn’t equipped. The deck has this kind of drawback, but if you combo with cards that like being destroyed like Shaddolls, Yang Zing, and Salamangreats. Serziel is a need for the deck, has decent stats and has support behind it for type and attribute, this archetype is all about balancing the Evil Eye monsters drawback.

Ok so I missed the Evil Eye of Selene. I’m sure it will haunt my dreams forever. Serziel, Watcher of the Evil Eye is a Level 4 Dark Fiend-type monster with 1600 Atk and 1400 Def. Dark Fiends are very popular and have been forever. This might be fun with the new Necrofear stuff coming later, but as it is, Serziel has good stats. Upon Normal Summon, Serziel searches any different Evil Eye card from your deck to your hand. Searcher cards are great for any archetype and makes this an easy card to run 3 of. It should be noted that this effect is not once per turn so you could get multiple searches off multiple Normal Summons. The effect that is once per turn is a good Quick Effect but only if you have the Evil Eye of Selene equipped to Serziel. You get to destroy one of your opponent’s targeted Special Summoned monsters. Afterwards you have to destroy a card you control during the next Standby Phase. A lot of cards like to be destroyed to gain effects, and Serziel can do it during either player’s turn. Anyway, it’s a great offensive effect to help clear the opponent’s board. Serziel has searching and destruction effects while Selene provides protection. What’s not to love? I guess a little more Atk would be nice too. Oh well. Run 3.

Now that we covered Selene, we can look at every other card in the archetype and finally look at a monster, so here is Serziel, Watcher of the Evil Eye.

Serziel is a Level 4 DARK Fiend with 1600 ATK and 1400 DEF. Stats are ok on a Level 4, though Selene easily boosts it, DARK and Fiend make for a fun combination as well. Upon Normal Summon, Serziel can search for any Evil Eye card from your deck that isn’t another Serziel of course. Any archetype wants a searcher, and here is one of the searchers for Evil Eyes, the other being the Field Spell though it only searches monsters. Serziel is most likely searching for Selene if you don’t already have it, or a themed Spell/Trap if you already got it in your hand. While this card is equipped with Evil Eye of Selene, you can target and destroy any Special Summoned monster your opponent controls and this is a Quick Effect. I’m glad Evil Eye of Selene gives the monsters more effects to make it more worthwhile in the deck, and it’ll be hard to get rid of this with Selene for long, so being able to pop a Special Summoned monster each turn is very good, as this effect of Serziel is a hard once per turn so maybe you can equip your other Selenes to other archetypal monsters. The final effect is that once per turn, during the next Standby Phase after you used the effect to destroy a Special Summoned monster, you must destroy a card you control. It is a noteworthy downside, but you can pop the Selene and banish something from the grave to reset your Selene, so that’s fine. You can also destroy the Field Spell in the archetype to maybe retrieve something from the graveyard as it does when said card is destroyed. You can also play something like an Artifact engine to pop Special Summoned monsters on your turn and then destroy the Artifacts on your opponent’s turn in order to get those effects off, since Scythe is very good and Moralltach is a decent card to this day. Serziel is easily the best Evil Eye monster and is a three of no matter how you are playing Evil Eyes.

Art: 4.5/5 Yep, that’s most certainly Fiendish. Would love to see these monsters wearing the Evil Eye of Selene, tbh.

Next up is Serziel, Watcher of the Evil Eye.  Level 4, Dark, Fiend, 1600/1400 attack and defense, which aren’t great, but aren’t terrible on a Level 4.  So, first we see a Normal Summon of this card nets you a theme specific card of your choice, (from the Deck to your Hand) other than this card.  A free card just for your Normal Summon is a good thing, and only opens doors for all you can do in the theme.

As a Quick Effect, when this card is equipped with Evil Eye of Selene, you can Target and destroy a Special Summoned Monster your opponent controls.  Wow!  Free destruction of a powerful opponent’s Monster just for equipping a card?  Advantage–to the Evil Eye player without a doubt.  This is appropriately, a once per turn effect.  You can’t go equipping multiple Selenes and destroy all your opponent’s beasts at once.

Lastly, once per turn, if you activate that destruction effect via Selene, you destroy one card you control.  Logically, one choice could be to destroy Selene, since you can bring it back from the Graveyard, as discussed in the review yesterday.  Destroying your own cards in the theme (or others) only can add more power and speed to this theme anyway, so that’s welcome as well.

Art:  5/5  I enjoy the Evil Eye being on the arm, and this art is Fiend appropriate, looking menacing and evil.  We also have an eye in the background, and the blend of colors both in the bodywork as well as the background really works well here for me.
