I can’t help but wonder what universities in our world would do differently if their founders were still around. Maybe it’s for the best that they’re not, but Strixhaven is a different case, and I suspect they’re glad that Shadrix and the other elders are here to defend them (seriously, have you seen that Mage Hunter card?). In this guy’s case, he attacks and blocks very effectively, and while his triggered ability may seem kind of risky, there are plenty of ways to make sure you get more advantage out of it than your opponent/s do. Maybe you have Hex Parasite to remove counters from opposing creatures, or one of black’s numerous ways to deal with herds of one-toughness creatures. And since Strixhaven’s newest students were also champions in Kylem’s arena (cf. Battlebond), I feel I should point out that you can choose your teammate in Two-Headed Giant . . .

Shadrix Silverquill has a lot of interesting tricks about him, particularly with him being a 2/5 flier with double strike that can start buffing himself and your entire army. While you have to give an opponent an effect, you’re still able to choose what would help them the least (and what helps you the most), and Silverquill shows a surprising propensity for going wide. No protection is a bit of a bummer, but considering how Mister Biggles can swoop early and often for massive damage, that hardly seems like a downside! He doesn’t even need to attack to trigger his ability, so you could use this to help enable an alpha strike. The other two abilities are nice value if you need them, and I feel like Shadrix does enough intriguing things to make him a powerful boss monster in all kinds of decks.

Constructed: 3.5 (not sure if he’s good enough, but he’s no slouch)
Casual: 5
Limited: 5
Multiplayer: 4
Commander: 4.25
