Faust
VIII, Boneyard Sorcerer
Teamwork
Type: Yoh
Cost: 0/1/0
Effect: In Faust VIII's zone, you may pay red
costs with yellow furyoku.
Flavor: "It's time to wake, my sweet! I have
some new friends that are just dying to meet
you!"
We finish the in solid fashion, forgoing the
powerful common teamwork theme for one of the
potentially most game changing rare teamworks in
the first set. This card is beloved for a number
of reasons, aside from its wicked combos I've
mentioned in a number of past card of the days
it also happens to be the closest thing Faust
fans have to him until next set and (I assume or
there will be mass chaos in the streets) Faust
comes out as a shaman. Just from looking at the
card, aside from the nice art, you wouldn't be
too impressed on initial glance. Its effect
doesn't really seem to capture Faust at all,
just a sort of generic furyoku promotion effect
seen in fellow yoh team shaman Joco. Alot of
teamworks are like this in the first set
however, so the real issue is playability, lets
see if he's really worth all the hype:
Pros:
- Average cost
- Allows the player to get around paying with
the hardest to acquire furyoku in the game.
Cons:
- Costs 1 of the very furyoku you're now going
to be spending
- Only team Yoh can use
Overview: Ok the pros and cons were a little
light today. The fact of the matter is this
cards really simple, theres no much to say on
what it does. Play a day of atonement in his
zone? You can pay for it with a yellow instead
of red. Play a Necrawakening in his zone, pay
for it with a green and a yellow. Basically as
long as you have extra yellow and red costs
Faust will be your friend. That is a catch on it
though since Yellow isn't the easiest color to
come by either your not always going to have
extra yellow to spare. And Faust himself costs a
yellow so your further decreasing the chance of
actually being able to take advantage of his
effect by playing him.
Deeper Analysis: Where this card really shines
is in its combos. Sure its true if your out of
red he can help get around your opponent trying
to sufficate by not letting your replenish red
but this isn't really a situation you want to be
in, one well placed desolate screams, possibly
even a cleanse or some other form of teamwork
destruction and your in a world of hurt. No for
faust to really be worth your time you need to
be really taking advantage of that effect not
just relying on it as a crutch thats easily
kicked out from under you.
Comobos/Uses: We've already reviewed some of its
best combos but incase you missed them or as a
review as of the first set Eon Crush and Ultra
Calvry Charge are both very game changing but
also very red intensive cards that Faust can
make for more playable. Yoh and his double
medium combined with Eon crush can do some
particularly sick combos. A friend of mine has
had eon crushes in the 20-40 range in force
thanks to Faust, double medium, and some good
furyoku management. I was skeptical on
consistancy of such a thing occuring until I
challenged him to put up or shut up and with the
game tied 2-2 a turn after using double medium
he played a faust followed by an eon crush and
sent a 22 at me -_- So yes these combos DO
happen in real play. Also I'd like to add that a
good build for faust isn't overly red intensive,
you should have cards like eon crush that can
take advantage of his effect to the fullest but
don't go over board on rest costs, there will be
duels where you just can't get him out or where
your opponents destroys him as quickly as you
can play him and in said cases your going to
find yourself constantly out of red taking hits
you shouldn't have do to lack of furyoku.
Final Rating Breakdown:
Constructed: 4/5 (Not for every deck but the
right deck can make him a monster)
Sealed: 3/5 (He's not horrible here but unless
he's put into a deck with costs well suited for
him his effect just isn't that great for that
cost)

Faust
VIII is a weird guy. I mean how many people do
you know have a skeleton attached to their side?
Anyways, I would first like to comment on the
card art. In the Japanese OCG, he was one of the
first 5 shamans cards released. If you find him
(the Japanese version that is) with a red border
along the outside of card (not the red color in
the background), then try to pick him up since
that was the very first printing and pretty
rare! I rank it 4th on my top 5 hardest to get
Mankin (Mankin is a short version of writing out
Shaman King) items in the world! Now that you
probably have had a Shaman King knowledge
overflow, let's try add Faust VIII to your
memory too!
Faust VIII is a rare Teamwork card with the
Trait Limitation of Yoh. The current Yoh traited
shamans are Yoh, Trey, Len, and Jun. If Faust
ever became a shaman card in the English game he
would follow under the Yoh trait as well.
One yellow for playing this card is fine, but
Faust VIII's effect is also hurt by the cost of
a yellow as I will explain in a bit.
His effect is similar to Joco (in Japanese his
name is Chocolove) but could be more powerful to
some. You can pay any red cost with yellow
furyoku. It's underpaying and cheating the
system. Faust's red cost switch effect could be
used when playing a strike or an effect from the
strike, it doesn't matter. Just remember you can
only use his effect if you are in his zone. His
effect isn't optional, but you can overpay at
any time, thus negating his effect. You can't
underpay with Green either, that's Joco's
effect.
A problem you may run into is a lack of yellow
furyoku. Let's say you have a starting 3 yellow
furyoku. You pay one to get Faust VIII onto the
field. Then you flip a strike with a cost of a
red, so you pay with yellow. Cool, it's working
out. Now your opponent returns your strike and
now you flip a strike that costs a yellow and a
red. You pay the red cost with yellow but then
you realize that you ran out of yellow furyoku!
Overpaying with red is the only option left.
That scenario above shows that you can grain
away alot of yellow fast. The trick is to refill
your yellow often to keep his effect useful.
This card can help you save furyoku for a few
card costs but if you waste it too quickly
you'll be back where you started. His cost of
one yellow is bad since it took away one of your
"red cost replacement furyoku." In casual and in
sealed you will be using more heavy costing
effects, mostly red, so this card would really
help. Tournaments are a problem with this card.
You might run into some green or yellow furyoku
control decks. Those will drain away your yellow
furyoku and leaving this card useless. Faust
VIII is playable in Tournaments but make sure
you have some anti-green/yellow control cards in
order to foil your opponents plans and help your
own.
