Welcome to typless non-rare strike week. This should be a fun week for all those players with small budgets trying to decide which typless strikes they should use to fill in the gaps in their deck. However I think you may find that every card this week could be used in many decks regardless of how large the player's card selection is. Today we start with a common one no less, Epicenter. I've seen epicenter pop up in a number of decks and I'm guilty of running it in a number of my own decks as well. Was I stupid in the head or was there rhyme to my reason, lets investigate further.

Pros
- Solid Stats
- Only costs 2 furyoku
- Can be boosted to a very powerful 6 for a nominal fee
- Any shaman can use it

Cons
- cost is 2 yellow, relatively expensive

Overview: Well first off have to look at this price, 2 yellow is pretty expensive, sure the average 5/5 costs 2 green and a yellow and 2 green is more or less worth a yellow (see 10 more sit ups) but theres something to be said for spreading out the costs. For instance if my opponent counters from yellow I gain a yellow and a green. If I then focus in green I have no gained 2 green and yellow for the turn to spend (assuming I completely burned out the turn prior). Conversely if I had a 2 yellow cost I wouldn't be able to pay it until I focused all the way down to my red (short of using the before mentioned 10 more situps). Its not a huge disadvantage (and with the right combos it can actually be an advantage) but it is worth noting. The other thing worth noting is although like most 5/5s (baren justice being the only exception) it has an effect, said effect has a cost to it. Although the effect is optional, if you use the effect you've now increased the price of Epicenter to a green and 2 yellow. That can get pretty costly pretty quickly if you use it alot.

Deeper Analysis: So what makes this card so worth considering? Well first off you need to have an understanding of the basic stats of this game. I'd say typically the average strike interecept is a 5. Melee particularly is chock full of 5/5s. There are numerous 4/6 and 6/4 as well, and a handful of strikes with 3 or less and 7 or greater intercepts. What does this mean? It means by paying that extra green for the effect your effectively getting over the hump, although it varies depending on strike type and deck construction in general a barage of 6s is a difficult thing for decks to deal with and typically speaking aside from a handful of really expensive cards if the attack is returned it will be with something weak.

Combos/Uses: As far as uses go I'd say any ranged or guardian shaman looking for some offensive thump should seriously consider epicenter. Although ranged and guardian do have a few strong attacks in general most of the fair priced 5-6 force strikes are in melee. Melee wouldn't neccesarily be hurt by running epicenter but they have enough 5/5s for 2 yellow with solid effects that it isn't quite as useful. Epicenter combos especially well for yoh teamn shaman who can make use of Joco to put that all yellow cost to their advantage, with Joco out its a 2 green 5/5 or a 3 green 5/6, pretty nice I'd say. Soul shaman can also use Relax to effectively convert the cost to 3 green for 5/5 or 4 green for 5/6. Blistering Onslaught is 4 green for 6/6 but thats a typed strike AND that 4th green isn't optional, if you only have 3 green and a red your going to have to pay out to use it where as epicenter as that versatility to only pump itself up when youv'e got some green to spare. I'd say epicenter is also a nice card for Jun decks running Lee Pai-long. To really get the most of Lee you need to already be sending a relatively high force and then use Lee to make it really significant but guardian has very few strikes as of the first set that fit that bill so Epicenter is a good potential substitute.

Final Rating Breakdown:
Constructed: 3.9/5 (yeah I'm sure your sick of all my .9 lately but as much as I like epicenter that high cost can't be ignored so I can't quite bring myself to give this a 4, but its certaintly a card worth considering for any offensively minded deck)
Sealed: 4.5/5 (One of the better commons you can pull)

Foreword

Hello everyone and welcome to the opening review for the week! Now before we go any further I want to let you guys know that I am experiencing some technical difficulties at the time. It seems that my WORD software has died on me. This is the reason for there not being a review for Friday. So I am being reduced to using a flunky third party word processor. Sorry this means no article this week, too. I desperately tried to fix things but I do not expect my computer to be back at 100% until Wednesday at the earliest. Again my many apologies, but there is nothing that I can do.

Anyways this week we take a look at cards selected by Dan. Our first card for review is a pretty big beat stick that seems very popular. With this being said read on...

Card Advantages

Epicenter is one of those cards that the new player will flock to. It boasts big stats for a very costly price and it can be potentionally even bigger. The big thing that Epicenter has going for it is the above average stats of five force and five intercept. Nice, eh? That is pretty dang tough to deal with seeing as we have such a limited card pool. Then again it will only score 50% of the time. (I see five force as a toss up as far as scoring goes.) But that is where the effect kicks in. For one extra green furyoku you can boost this sucker by 1 force. That is pretty nasty if you were to ask me. This pushes your score rate up by about 15/20% and can really be a tough thing to deal with. I used to use this card in multiples for this reason. Big force equals big time advantage over the opponent young grasshoppers. >.< Ehh, I had to add that somewhere sometime...

Rounding out the good points on Epicenter is the fact that it is not franchised. Happy times huh? Yes, young beatdown players scream in happiness! You get a big weapon to beat people over the head with. Only problem is it does have some big drawbacks.

Pros

Nice stats.

Nice effect.

Not franchised.

Card Disadvantages

Sorry to say but this great power comes with one big ol cost. Coming in at a whopping two yellow furyoku, Epicenter is not cheap to use. In fact it is what breaks this card down. The fact that you are paying 2 yellow furyoku for a little power, to me, is not very advantageous. In fact it is pretty meaningless in my humble opinion. I used to run this as I stated before, but the price simply made it to where this was way to much. In a Zeke deck like mine you want to play advantageously. And this card is just not advantageous at all. You are losing three furyoku potentially to get a 60/70% chance at a point. While not terrible if you were running up against a defensive deck this would get creamed. And against another beatdown deck this would again be knocked away easily. However, this card does pose a threat to furyoku control decks and the like. It whales on Ponchi and Konchi and everything else they might throw at you. And in a beatdown deck match up it can be okay at least

Cons

Poor cost.

Summary

To me this card should see a lot of play. Why not? In such a limited card pool this thing can be a great card and it is in my opinion a nessacary evil. I cannot not recommend it in beatdown. Just dont go overboard. Run two and no more than that.

Today we have an Ashil card. In the dub I believe his name is Basil. He's not to fond of Yoh. You can see what he looks like in "Ponder, Consider, Reflect." But today we have "Epicenter".

A common card with no trait limitations. This card can be played mostly anywhere, but if you want to put him into a character themed deck, it would be Zeke (Hao).

Cost of 2 yellow furyoku is a tricky price. It's stronger than a 4 intercept and force, but not by much. The price is reasonable, as I believe more high costing cards should be strikes. The cost won't hurt you, so it's fine.

His base intercept and force is 5. The standard in terms of strikes. It can stop the Opening attack, and a great foundation for powering up. His effect even powers him up. For the cost of 1 green furyoku you get an extra 1 force. About 80% of the time you play him you will pay that cost. A 5-6 card for 1 green and 2 yellow is pretty good. The only time I see you not using the effect is if you don't have any green furyoku or very low on it.

With it's effect of "Only use once." I would like to make a point. That effect is only in effect when you played that card. If next turn your flip another "Epicenter" you can use that effect again. Even if you reshuffle your deck back together you can still use that effect again. That only counts the time you play it on the field.

This card is can be played basically anywhere. I think tabletops are the best though. If the ground works for you, that's cool too. Casual, Tournament, and Sealed can all support him. I wouldn't run too many of him in any deck as he could really chip away those yellow furyoku.

Casual: 4/5
Tournament: 4/5
Sealed: 4/5
