Point Blank
Strike
Type: None
Cost: 1/2/0
Stats: 7/4

Effect: If you counterattack with Point Blank, look at the top card of your deck. You may put it in your discard pile.

For our second card of the day we take a look at what I've seen to be among the more heavily played cards in the opening set.  Why is that, and is it really worthy of all that play, well thats what we're here to examine.

Pros:

- High Intercept of 7 will block just about anything, unmodified by advantages, that this initial set has to offer.

- Solid Force of 4 is just enough to get over the 3 or less "Punisher" cards as well as force extra foryoku payments on cards like 1080 Flash, Sucker Punch, and Shikigami

- Useful deck manipulation effect, even just seeing/changing 1 card can be the difference between winning and losing in a game of top decking

- Typless so any deck can run it

Cons:

- Like all typless its a little expensive to balance the fact all decks can use it, 3 converted cost, and 2 must be yellow can be harsh when your running low.

- Even though a 4 force won't likely hurt you, its also unlikely that its gonna score for you either.

Overview: So basically Point Blank is a solid block with a little bit of force and Mind like deck manipulation thrown on for good measure.  Its not really economical like Bone Army but is it over priced for what it does?  Well lets compare it to a "typed" attack with the same stats, Disheartening Blow.  DB is a guardian strike with 7/4 for 1/0/1 with a pitch ability to make an opponent lose a yellow.  So same stats, an effect (although Point Blanks always goes off and doesn't require pitching it), and your paying a red instead of 2 yellow.  It seems to me despite being typless Point Blank is a pretty good buy.

Deeper Analysis: So its clear its versatile and fairly priced, does that mean you should go and throw 4 in every deck you run?  Not neccesarily.  3 foryoku of any color is still relatively expensive, and 2 being of yellow will add up pretty quick.  Whats more in a Mind shaman's deck you're probably already manipulating the top of your deck quite a bit so Point Blanks extra effect won't be quite as useful.  Its semi high cost doesn't really lend itself well to low cost foryoku domination decks and its average force doesn't lend itself well to high cost big hitter decks.  All in all Point Blank does seem to make a great filler card in pretty much any deck, but I can't really think of any specific deck it would be a staple for right now.

Potential Use/Combo: Want some deck manipulation in a non Mind deck?  Need a solid block strike that doesn't get punished?  Got a few deck slots to spare and your decks foryoku is usually fare to strong (that is to say your not constantly out of foryoku living off what you focus and replenish)?  Point Blank might be just what your looking for!  I guess you could say it combos well with situation cards cause if you see ones coming up with its effect and its not the situation you want it in you can get rid of it.

Rating Break down:
Constructed: 4/5 (Not a deck staple but in the current set its defiantly one of the better typless cards out there, atleast in my humble opinion)

Sealed: 5/5 (The ability to sift through and discard those cards you pulled you don't like is many times more useful and the stats are still awesome.

Andysislands

Point Blank, one of the most feared cards in the starting set. Is it more than just a cool picture of Marco pointing his gun at you at point blank range? Let's explore(warning, it's a long one).

No trait limitations, so you could place this card into any deck.

A 7 intercept will stop most of the strikes sent at you and a 4 force is a standard. Most cards that have a high intercept have a low force or vise-versa. A 7-4 combination alone can make it fairly powerful. It's cost is 1 green and 2 yellow. If you have to counterattack against a 7 force from your opponent, then your opponent would have most likely already used at least one red furyoku.

If the card stopped there, it would be a very valuable card in a deck countering "beatdown" cards. Beatdown is normally described as low cost and a powerful force cards used in a deck. A 7 could stop most of those cards, but as an added bonus this card has an effect which adds to the buzz about this card. If you draw this card, you are most likely going to play it (unless you don't have the furyoku, then you are in trouble). So with that being said, you can plan your next turn. When you draw your card and deciding to discard it or not you got to look at what your opponent is going to do next turn. Here's how it will play out:

A. Your opponent will counterattack with a 4 or higher force. So if you draw a strike with 3 intercept or less, then you send it to the discard. If you get an advantage or a teamwork, discarding is depending on if it will help your intercept.

B. Your opponent can't counterattack so you score a point. Then your opponent will decide who will defend against the Opening Attack. Your opponent will look at if you discarded or not. If you didn't then you can counterattack against the Opening Attack's force of 4 which result in that move being pointless. So if you didn't discard your opponent would be in his/her best interest to receive the Opening Attack against himself/herself in hopes of getting something more powerful than a 4 force.. If you did discard though, your opponent has nothing to judge off of since he/she doesn't know what you have more than you do.

Either option A or B ends in your favor. If your opponent counterattacks with Point Blank aginst your Point Blank the same options can be used in reverse. Because of the ability to almost always use this card and an effect that will keep things in your favor this card has gained a bit of respect. UDE has stated that even this card will not be banned or restricted from the 4 limit.

How to rate this card fairly is hard. It's a great card, but doesn't mean it's right for every deck. If you find your deck needs an extra card or two after you have filled in the spots for what ever your deck is trying to get done this would be a good card.

Casual: 4/5 (You might not have a set deck type yet, so you may be playing a few of these)
Tournament: 4.5/5 (If you need this, you will use it. But there are decks that can play without it)
Sealed: 5/5 (no trait limits, a common, powerful, well rounded, draft this)

Knives 101

Point Blank

Well in the game of Shaman King I consider four strike to be as low as I'm willing to go with counterattacking. Point Blank makes up for this nearly unreliable Force with a nice Intercept of Seven. Pretty decent for a heavy defense deck. The deck thinning ability of Point Blank could provide a good way to control your flips. Unfortunatly when looking at the next card in your deck you have nothing to compare it to. The card after what you discard from Point Blank's effect could be worse or better. This effect seems good when you want to charge a zone via an advantage, but otherwise I see little uses for it. The cost of Point Blank is a bit underneath what most cards with 7-9 intercept must pay though. Overall I think it's a bit better than the other high defense cards since you don't need to pay a red to use it, and the attack isn't a horrible three.

Rating: 4

Foreword

Hello and welcome to the second of three card of the day reviews this week! I would like to thank the good people that praised my last review and your kind comments are appreciated.

Today we look at a card with more uses than a Swiss army knife. (Well maybe not that many.) It is a card that I tend to call a fortune teller . And not only is it that, but it also has some amazing stats to go along with it. And the greatest thing of all is that it s only a common. Read on

Card Advantages

Point Blank has a lot going for it. First well look at the effect of Point Blank which allows you to peek at the top card of your deck and discard it if you like as long as you counter attack with it. The thing that makes this effect so good is the game of Shaman King as a whole. In Shaman King you re always top decking. In fact you might even say that the Shaman King TCG is a game of out top decking the opponent. So suffice to say Point Blank has a very nifty ability here. Basically you re getting to set yourself up for your following turn. This is very important since you re going to be able to plan ahead and know just what you re going to flip, or be able to skim a card off of your deck that may be of no use to you in the current situation. Basically it works out like this, say you just flipped Point Blank up and paid its cost. You have successfully counter attacked so you then look at the top card of your deck. You now know that the opponent is going to need a strike with an intercept of at least 4. So let s say the card on top of your deck is Bone Army. (For the effect of Bone Army refer to yesterdays card review.) Bone Army has a rather weak intercept of 4. However, you now have the advantage of making a choice in this situation as to whether or not you ll start off with Bone Army next turn. Now you can discard Bone Army in favor of having a chance of pulling a card with stronger intercept power next turn. Since we know that the opponent will most likely flip up a card with a higher force than Bone Army s intercept, we will discard it. In this way we have set ourselves up to have a better chance of countering in the Green zone next turn.

Besides the effect of Point Blank there are the all important stats. First of all Point Blank has an average cost of three furyoku, one green, and two yellow. This is relatively cheap considering the fact that you re getting a very high 7 intercept and a respectable 4 force. The intercept of Point Blank is of course the main draw of the card. Since you have a very high likelihood of counter attacking with 7 intercept you ll be getting the effect off quit often. In fact 9 times out of 10 you will be able to counter attack with 7. Not only are you going to be able to shield yourself from those pesky strikes, but you ll also be able to save yourself from a good amount of signature moves. Since many signature moves have a base force of 6 you will be able to save yourself more often than not. Besides all of this Point Blank also boasts the advantage of not having a trait. This means that Point Blank can fit into any deck using any character as its Shaman. And did I mention that this beauty is a common? ;)

Pros

A very versatile effect.

An extremely high intercept of 7.

Is a common.

Is not restricted to any one trait.

Card Disadvantages

While Point Blank is indeed a gem of a card it does have one major flaw. The fact that it has a below average force of 4. While not horrible, 4 force is not going to win you many battles. In fact 95% of the time the opponent will successfully counterattack 4 force. There are also cards that will punish this weenie force for being so weak. We tend to call these cards Punishers . A Punisher is a card that gets a certain boost or bonus when facing a weak attack. There are a good deal of Punishers in the first set that can get a boost as high as 4 intercept or force! This can be very scary to some decks since this type of boost could result in a very high counter attack from the opponent. While these cards are not all to popular it is best to watch out for them anyway. With such a low card pool there is a high likelihood you will see them in competitive play. But hey who knows, with such a new game we could see these cards come into play with the sole purpose of countering cards like this one. And it is always better to be prepared for the unknown than to not be and be caught in a tight spot.

Cons

Relatively low force leaves you open to Punishers.

Summary

All in all I would have to say that Point Blank is one of the most balanced and versatile cards in Reincarnation. Being able to play fortune teller with the opponent and having such a high intercept makes very hard not to recommend this card. Low force aside I would say that running 2-4 copies of this card as a back up plan or even a safety net from signature moves is a good idea. There are cards that do have the potential of making you regret playing this card, but in all reality they are few and far between as far as playability goes. Right now I don t see any reason not to play this card. Simply put run it!
