Strike
Type: None
Cost: 1/0/0
Stats: 3/1
Effect: Red --> +4 to intercept.
We finish off this week with a card note worthy
to me because I once posted an articles depicted
this very card as my pick for least useful card
in the reincarnation set. Since that time my
opinions on this card have changed some what but
I still believe its far too expensive for its
stats and what it does, lets look into why.
Pros
- Anyone can use it
- EXTREMELY cheap if you don't use its effect
- Versatile
Cons
- Very low base intercept
- Very expensive effect
- Absurdly low force
Overview: This is another one of those
"versatile" cards. That is, cards that can alter
their stats as the situation dictates. Facing
something small and punishable, this is a really
economical 1 green cost strike. Facing something
medium to some what large in force, well it can
still block that too for a green and a red.
Deeper Analysis: I think probably the best way
to look at this card is as if its base cost was
a green and red and it had a punisher effect
that said "if facing a 3 force or less this
strike costs -1 red". How often your going to
run int 3 force or less strikes will very
depending on the deck your playing against, many
decks I know run no 3 force or less strikes at
all (outside of maybe dark ascedance). Infact
with the possible exception of furyoku control
decks I'd say the vast majority of decks you'll
face won't send punishable forces more often
then they send 4 or greater ones so really you
just can't count on getting this for a single
green, it should just be more like a nice reward
if it does happen. And that is why this card
fails for me. Because as a 7/1 it is horribly
over priced. If your playing guardian there are
numerous 7/4 with worthwhile effects for the
same cost. Playing Mellee? Theres Yamatano
Orochi, a 7/5 with a nifty effect for the same
cost. Or Furious response, an 8/3 with a
significantly more potent punishing effect.
Ranged perhaps has teh least options for the 7
intercept slot but there are still options out
there. And lack of additional useful effect
aside that 1 force can and will get you into
trouble. I just dare you to send a 1 force at a
fully charged Jeane. And Len, Trey, and lyserg
have signatures that can make small intercepts
pay dearly as well. And don't forget the card we
reviewed last frieday, Gush of Flame eats 1
forces alive.
Combos/Uses: Ok I bashed this card alot but I
did say I've come to like it more, why is that?
Its because I finally tryed my hand at a furyoku
control deck. Such a deck plays inheriantly
different then a normal build, you don't usually
care what the force of your stike is, your goal
is simply to block your opponents strikes as
quickly as possible and maintain furyoku
advantage starving your opponent to death. In
said deck type a 1 force isn't really as
harmful, a 7 intercept is very nice, and a
punisher effect that gives you potential furyoku
advantage is ideal. Besides, with only 1 set
worth of cards theres only so many cheap high
intercept cards any given shaman has access too,
shikigami can be a nice little throw in for
those lacking cards or just wanting a few more
high intercepts then their strike type has.
Final Stat Breakdown:
Constructed: 2/5 (+1.5 in a furyoku control
deck)
Sealed: 2.5/5 (Its a nice high intercept and
your more likely to face punishably small
forces) |

So, how
has the information from E3 been? Good, bad,
mixed? I bring it up, since I have been
following coverage on the internet all week.
Also it just so happens that more pictures of
Shaman King: Master of Spirits 2 have been
released. Follow the link at the end of this
review to see some pictures about it! Now let's
first look at "Shikigami," a card featuring
Yohmei, Yoh's Grandfather.
This strike has no trait limitations, so it's
free for all. Next his cost is a very cheap; 1
green furyoku. Basically a free cost when you
replenish. Great uncommon card for low furyoku
cost decks, until you look at it's poor stats.
Yohmei's Intercept and Force stand at the weakly
as 3:1. Basically useless for most of the
strikes you will face. Luckily his effect let's
him power up his intercept at the cost of a red
furyoku. You can use it only once but you get +4
intercept. Now you strike has a strong intercept
of 7. Enough to counter the opening attack and
the golden 5 force. That's great and all, but
you still only have a force of 1. That's way too
weak to be played in any format. This card is
just way under-par. I really don't see much of a
use for this anywhere. People like to say that
every card has a purpose, but I think this one
just doesn't cut it.
Casual: 1/5
Tournament: 1/5
Sealed: 1/5
Shaman King: Master of Spirit 2 is coming out in
August. The ESRB rating is E+10. View some of
the pictures here (after reading the other CotD
reviews and all Pojo has to offer of course!):

Name:
Shikigami
Number: REI_018
Cost (G/Y/R): 1/0/0
Type: Strike
Rarity: Uncommon
Trait: None
Stats: 3/1
Text: "Red => +4 Intercept. Use only once."
Flavor Text: "Once you reach my level of focus,
the wind will be your shield, the leaves, your
sword."
Hrmm... this is one of those cards I've never
run before. And after reviewing it, I'm fairly
sure I still wouldn't bother running it. But
let's take a look at the ins and outs of this
card
This card rocks because:
-It has a cheap base cost
-The effect is pretty powerful
-It's traitless
-The flavor text is pretty cool
Let's face it. getting a strike for one green is
simply amazing. If you can pull off the strike
without using the effect, youve got what is
essentially the most economical strike in the
game.
The effect is pretty powerful, too. A boost of 4
intercept is a pretty high boost, for a stat
enhancer. To top that off, it's traitless, so
when you're playing Sealed (which is probably
where this card is best), you can build it into
any deck you want to.
And that flavor text is just cool. It's like
poetic justice. It just makes me want to go out
and kick ass. I can only hope all of you are as
moved by the flavor text as I am.
This card sucks because:
-The base stats are terrible
-The ability costs a lot to use
Well... looking at the advantages of this card,
it's almost like i was trying to hide the basic
truth about this card: It's not that great. The
fact is, what you're getting for one green is
not something you're going to be able to play on
a regular basis. The base stats are 3/1, which
is extremely low. I couldn't see it getting much
play without the effect activated.
Here's where it gets worse. The ability is
pretty expensive, by itself. Sure, adding 4
intercept is a huge boost, but when a 3/1 for
one green turns into a 7/1 for a green and a
red, it's sort of iffy. There are much better
stats you can get for a green and a red, such as
8/3, potentially 8/7 for Furious Response. And,
the ability's nowhere near as effective as
Razor's Edge, which is one yellow for +4
intercept and +1 force, making that card a
potential 7/4 for two yellow. That's cheap...
Shikigami is not.
DANGER! Kids, don't try these combos at home:
Ummm...you can do that thing... with that other
card... with the thing that lets you... do that
thing. Aw, who am I kidding? Frankly, this
doesn't combo well with anything. Perhaps if
it's in a Faust zone, you can change the effect
cost to a yellow, but then Razor's Edge is still
a better effect for the same cost. No combos for
this bad mother.
Summary:
Ummm... this has the potential to be the
cheapest strike you can play, if the opponent
happens to be sending a low force at you, like
from Fetish Frenzy. Unfortunately, you'll rarely
be able to block using the base cost, and will
often have to pay for the overpriced effect, in
which case the economy of this card is pretty
much destroyed. It's not really playable in
Constructed because of this, but in Sealed, he's
much better, because you'll have a lot more of
the low-force strikes to contend with, and high
intercept at any price can be pretty useful in
that format.
