Season 1 - Episode 19
Yoh Versus Lenny

Summary: Episode 19
Summary by: BridgitKiido

I use the original names, but the dub plots and personalities and stuff like that, in case you begin to wonder about the entire Ren, Tamao, Manta, and Horo thing.  Here's a small chart, in case you need it.

Original - Dub
Tamao - Tammy
Ren - Len
Manta - Morty
Horo - Trey

Silva and his friend are arguing about the limited amount of food they have and the fact that they are splurging their funds on tacky items such as a television. Then they start arguing about this one soap opera, of all the things they could be arguing about. The woman who is overseeing the shaman tournament (whose name is Goldba) yells at them by telepathically appearing on the television screen, and she is eating a steak while she does this. THAT gets them to the meat market, but as usual, that is not the point. Meanwhile, Yoh is listening to music rather loudly when Anna comes into the room. After yelling at him, she gives him a grocery list. Needless to say, he gets on the job right away, mostly to keep her from howling at him even more. Then, Tamao comes over and asks if she can stay with them. Anna, who basically decides everything at the house, approves. On the way to the store, Amidamaru expresses to Yoh that Tamao likes the young shaman. Hm, never thought of Amidamaru as a gossipy samurai... Of course, that is only to get off the topic of the next battle. Yoh is still quite relaxed about it, as he always is. Meanwhile, Ren is still training for the battle, even though Bason tells him to take a break. He must want to win this pretty badly, huh. Of course, he only has to win this – the third round of the preliminaries – in order to stay in the tournament.

The next morning, Manta meets Yoh at his house and they head off to the battle site. Our young narrator starts to describe the scenery like the host of a sport might, and then he reaches the point about Yoh, our hero, who is changing into his battle clothing in the middle of the road where everyone can see him. Manta asks him to go behind a tree or something, but Yoh's excuse for this behavior is that it is better than changing in front of Ren. Well, he is right about that, at least. Anna and Tamao are staying behind, and watching the very same soap opera that Silva and his friend were arguing about. And you would think that Anna, at least, would be interested in the battle. Tamao says something about Yohmei, Yoh's grandfather, not believing in her and that being why she left. Anna says that she can stay as long as she does some chores, which basically means that they could possibly have a new cook or something.
At the battle site, Ren rides up in his vampire-like outfit and on his white horse. The shamans then merge their spirits and weapons – Amidamaru into Yoh’s sword and Bason into Ren’s blade-on-a-stick thing which is actually called a Kwan Dao. Then, the battle begins! Ren keeps attacking, and Yoh keeps defending himself, making tons of bad jokes along the way. Of course, personally I found them quite hilarious.

Then, Ren increases the feryoku poured into his spirit control which makes his attacks that much more powerful. He keeps breaking Yoh's spirit control, but then Yoh breaks Ren's which costs him more energy. One thing is for certain, Yoh has a definite attitude advantage, because as we saw in his fight against Faust VIII, anger will get you nowhere. Meanwhile, Amidamaru is certainly no pushover. He is used to fighting enemies more powerful than him because he grew up that way. After they exchange a few hits, Ren uses a huge attack that fails to beat Yoh but hurts Manta. Silva, who is watching the battle, points out to his own spirits that Ren only knows rage. Apparently, it was his uncle who made it so. Meanwhile, Jun tries to persuade the uncle in question to stop the fight, but he won't. His motto, apparently, is "destroy or be destroyed" and he doesn't really care what happens to his nephew if he loses. Oh brother.
