I read a couple of Bloomburrow preview and design articles, but am still not quite sure why threshold is back as a minor theme in the set. Perhaps counting the number of cards in graveyards is just back in fashion? Shoreline Looter is perhaps the strongest threshold card in the set, if you’re ranking threshold cards; actually, it’s one of the stronger threshold cards ever, and one of the stronger aggressive blue creatures ever. From a design point of view, losing a creature with a saboteur ability is part of a strategic tradeoff, but from a player’s point of view, it feels good when you can attack without the risk of losing your creature to a blocker. It’s also a mono-colored signpost for making a tempo strategy in blue, in Standard and elsewhere, committing to the table while still generating card quality and eventually card advantage. And it’s an otter, so when you put all this together it’s one of my absolute favorite cards in the whole set.

Shoreline Looter is definitely not going to be the second coming of Invisible Stalker, but it definitely has a bit of intrigue to it beyond marking the return of threshold to Standard…while it is more flavor than a mechanical return proper, it makes this a more interesting take on the standard looter effect blue has. Going from looting early to drawing later means this has acceptable utility when it can’t be blocked, and Otters do have acceptable support in the set. Being a 1/1 isn’t great, but it’s hard to kill as a esult of combat, and being able to get value is always a good place to be.
