Back in 2007, there was little inkling that Slivers would ever return in a serious manner or that we’d ever get another legendary Sliver. The Sliver Queen was seemingly left behind in Tempest, and there was no indication that they’d ever be a major theme again outside of a nostalgia-themed set like Time Spiral. Of course, we now know that they made it to Shandalar somehow, giving us the Sliver Hivelord; and Modern Horizons had Slivers with lots of quirky keywords, meaning you can now basically pick your favorite five-color commander for a Sliver deck (there’s a sentence I never though I’d say).

Sliver Hivelord is the one you pick when you want to end the game right now, and he plays particularly well with the token-generating parts of the species. He’s got the “standard” legendary Sliver stats, making him quite efficient just on his own in any deck that can cast him and very undercosted when you consider that all Slivers share abilities. In environments without a lot of color fixing, you basically have to look out for Dread Return or the like, but when you do, he can do a lot of damage.

Out of the five legendary Slivers, Sliver Legion is probably the one of the five least-suited to being commander in a Sliver deck; it’s not bad, so to speak, but all of the others have effects to them that make them more useful at the helm. But its effect might be the strongest in a vacuum, since the tribe tends to swarm aggressively and gratuitously, and each one buffing each other one means really ugly things in a game. While Sliver Legion can “backfire” in buffing your opponent’s Changelings or Slivers, that hardly seems like an issue when they can end the game in a flurry of clicks and chitters in one turn. That it’s a 7/7 that benefits from your other Slivers is almost irrelevant, but it certainly doesn’t hurt!

Constructed: 2 (Slivers in Modern go more in on the swarm aspect, to where Legion is almost extraneous; if you want a boss Sliver, Hivelord is usually the better option)
Casual: 4.75
Limited: 4.25 (held back by Time Spiral having awful color fixing)
Multiplayer: 4
Commander: 4.75 (if this resolves, the game is probably over)
