Sliver Overlord – MTG Secret Lair

It’s hard to say which of the five-color Sliver legends is the strongest overall, though I think the Overlord gets the credit in a game that’s likely to last a long time. With enough time and enough mana, you’ll not only never run out of Slivers but also have the exact one you need at any time. His third ability is strong under those long-game circumstances when one or more of your opponents is also playing Slivers, though such decks are likely to be running all the same game-breakers and it can easily turn into perfectly symmetrical violence. If your game plan is something like Patriarch’s Bidding, you’ll probably want to go with Sliver Legion, and if your meta has a lot of control decks you’ll do well with M15’s Hivelord; but the Overlord’s name is well earned, as it is unmatched at keeping its deck held together and all its parts moving to the inevitable end.

Over the years, we’ve seen five different legendary Sliver creatures: the Queen, the Overlord, the Legion, the Hivelord, and the First one. Overlord has generally settled into the preferred boss monster of the Sliver deck (and is its best Commander), thanks to its tutoring effect.

Of course, this isn’t to say the other Sliver boss creatures aren’t excellent fits in a deck, but the ability of the Overlord to repeatedly tutor out other Slivers (including all of the other boss Slivers) for a reasonable sum of mana is a rather unique effect, one that helps a deck with occasional consistency issues be even more obnoxiously consistent. Stealing other Slivers isn’t the most important effect to the Overlord, but it’s certainly not unwelcome in mirror matches, and it even plays well against the Changeling cards or decks splashing other Slivers.

Slivers as a tribe are way too slow and fair for Legacy, so it’s a fool’s errand to send them into battle there, especially with a five-color monstrosity at their helm. A 7/7 body is pretty legit, and other Slivers can afford it protection (like shroud), but the tribe doesn’t fire fast enough to make an impact on the format. They’re still pretty potent in more casual play, though, and Slivers will always be one of the most menacing Commander decks one can sit down with.

And boy what an awesome card it is, Sliver Overlord! All your slivers are belong to us right? Well let’s dig in and-

SLIVER OVERLORD HAS DECIDED THAT THIS VESSEL IS UNSUITABLE TO DESCRIBE THE UNFATHOMABLE GRAVITY OF THE SLIVER OVERLORD WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. ERGO SLIVER OVERLORD WILL REVIEW SLIVER OVERLORD.

SLIVER OVERLORD IS THE OVERLORD OF SLIVERS. IT WILL SUMMON SLIVERS.

SLIVER OVERLORD WILL COMMAND ALL SLIVERS.

ALL SLIVERS WILL BE ASSIMILATED INTO SLIVER ARMY.

THERE IS NO SURVIVAL.
THERE IS NO HOPE.

Commander: 5/5 – Sliver Queen and Sliver Overlord are amazing, Overlord allows you to play more silver bullets though.
Multiplayer: 5/5 – Totally awesome for this kind of format, it’s a fun build around card perfect for kitchen tables.
Limited: 1/5 – Unless its P1P1 it’s going to be hard to build around.
Constructed: 1/5 – The power in slivers comes in their cheap cmc with overwhelming effects.
Cube: 1/5 Unless you have a huge amount of slivers in the cube, which can be incredibly parasitic in design, this card isn’t going to do much.
