Spiral Spear Strike
– #SS04-ENA21
If “Gaia The Fierce Knight”, “Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight”, or “Gaia the Dragon Champion” you control attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage to your opponent. If “Gaia the Dragon Champion” inflicts battle damage with this effect: Draw 2 cards, then discard 1 card.

King of Lullaby Hello Pojo Fans, Spiral Spear Strike is a Throwback Thursday choice I didn’t think would ever be considered good. Piercing ability for “Gaia the Fierce Knight”, “Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight” and “Gaia the Dragon Champion” was all well and good, but until now there wasn’t much of a strategy or synergy for this card. With new ways of searching it, it becomes more attainable, and with a few new monsters it become more useful. Gaia the Magical Knight is treated as Gaia the Fierce Knight so there’s some piercing potential, and Gaia the Magical Knight of Dragons is treated as Gaia the Dragon Champion. The draw 2 discard 1 works only with Gaia the Dragon Champion, but now with Spiral Fusion you can get two attacks per turn, and Spiral Spear Strike benefits from being older and not having the hard once per turn restriction. With 5200ATK through Spiral Fusion, whichever “Gaia the Dragon Champion” you have will be doing serious battle damage if attacking defense monsters that you may not need the cards, but no one is going to reject the potential of a net +4 (2 opponent monsters destroyed, 2 cards to your hand) with your opponent barely hanging on if using the battle piercing. This hand advantage comes more into play if you’re taking down a field of bigger monsters and there’s more Yu-Gi-Oh to play. While there is a new “Gaia the Dragon Champion” we’re reviewing tomorrow, it’s worth noting that Sky Galloping Gaia the Dragon Champion will be 5200ATK as well, can change the battle position of monsters on the field when attacking, and searches this card out upon summon. Crunch$G Throwback Thursday gives us one of the classic Gaia support cards: Spiral Spear Strike. Spiral Spear Strike is a Continuous Spell that gives your Gaia the Fierce Knight, Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight, or Gaia the Dragon Champion the ability to pierce. It’s good at least with the Fusions since, as mentioned, they all treat themselves as Gaia the Dragon Champion, so they all get the piercing and Sky Galloping Gaia the Dragon Champion can search this on Fusion Summon. The only problem is with Gaia the Fierce Knight and Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight as the latest Gaias don’t treat themselves as Gaia the Fierce Knight or Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight, and you specifically have to use the original 2 Gaias with this, so the new and better Gaias won’t get the piercing. If you pierce with this effect with Gaia the Dragon Champion, you can draw 2 and discard 1 for some strong consistency, and it’s not a once per turn so it works with Spiral Fusion with those double attacks, though you shouldn’t need more cards if you’re already going to straight up win. It doesn’t include Gaia the Fierce Knight or Swift Gaia the Fierce Knight for this, but those two are outdated and the newer Gaias once again don’t treat themselves as the original 2, so it isn’t something you really lose out on. Spiral Spear Strike helps you go for game, the draw won’t matter if you win immediately but it’s good to have if you don’t win in the moment, and it’s searchable enough to not need 3 since that gets a little cloggy and it doesn’t do much on its own. Advanced Rating: 3/5 Art: 5/5 Classic artstyle is nostalgic enough, though it could of been cool if it was Gaia the Dragon Champion on this artwork instead of Gaia the Fierce Knight. |
Alex Searcy Coming to another Magic card named after the attack of a Monster, Throwback Thursday gives us Spiral Spear Strike. A simple Continuous Magic here granting Trample to the original Gaia, Dragon Champion, and Swift Gaia, is nothing impressive on its own. I like Trample and consider it to be fairly overlooked outside classics like Airknight, Gear Golems, and Cyber End Dragon, but I digress. If Dragon Champion inflicts Damage with this, you get to Draw 2 cards and Discard 1. And with even what we’ve covered in Spiral Fusion, you could have a double attacking Dragon Champion with 5200 attack and Trample. In my opinion, this card is still just okay. It’s only at peak effect with 1 of its 3 Monsters, and only best if you use another card to bring it out. Doable? Certainly, but you won’t always have them together. Rating: 2.75/5 Art: 3.5/5 It IS Gaia performing his attack, but this is a little lacking to me. |
