Hello Pojo Fans,

Spright Elf is the only Link monster on our Top 10 this year, but made it pretty high in the rankings at #4.

Two monsters but you need at least one Level/Rank/Link 2, Spright Elf was part of the turn progression that made Spright so dominant in their onset. First would be Gigantic Spright to lock down any hope of them Special Summoning something during your turn to ruin your plays (Nibiru), as well as get another Level 2, then came Spright Elf as another extender and protection. Any monster in zones its arrows are pointing, Spright Elf will protect from targeting.

In addition to targeting protection through its Link Points, Spright Elf has a Quick Effect that gets you a +1 each turn as long as you have a Link/Xyz/Level 2 monster in your grave to go after. Your opponent will likely control a monster, so you’ll get a Rank or Link 2 back during their turn if you want. You can save this effect for if Spright Elf was going to be destroyed and replace it with another monster, or you can use it immediately to get a search or set up a negation. With how you may go through a copy of each Spright you run in one turn, you could have your choice of which effect Spright Elf sets up. The #1 play of course is Special Summoning Spright Blue and getting that archetype search.

Spright Elf is only limited by the amount of potential targets in your grave. Searching, negation, getting another body on field to interact with something else you have, Spright Elf was needed to help make Sprights good during either turn because they lacked strong ATK monsters (minus Gigantic Spright). A cost free Special Summon that turns into a negation or searcher on your opponent’s turn is good no matter how you spin it. Spright Elf is the highest Spright on our countdown for a reason: responsiveness, protection, and extension on either turn, that’s pretty powerful.

We are 1 slot away from the top 3 and we got more Spright representation on this list as we got one of the most generic Sprights they made. From Power of the Elements, we have Spright Elf.

Spright Elf is a Link-2 FIRE Thunder with 1400 ATK and arrows pointing Bottom Left and Bottom Right. Ok ATK, good arrows, fine Attribute, solid Type. Materials are any 2 monsters, but 1 of the 2 must be a Level/Rank/Link 2 monster, which works considering you’re likely running one of the three if you run this. First bit mentions it not being able to be used as Link Material the turn it was Link Summoned, a clause you usually see on very strong Links. Your opponent cannot target monsters this points to with card effects, which is good protection to give to boss monsters if you can get them in the zones this points to, which is easy enough. Final effect is a Quick Effect in the Main Phase to revive any Level 2 monster, which is great for anything that runs said Level 2 monster, or you can instead revive a Link-2 or Rank 2 if the opponent controls a monster, which opens up some interesting options. Hard once per turn on the revival so you don’t get too many monsters back. Elf is still one of the best Sprights considering it’s the most generic of them all. Any Deck running good Level 2s getting access to this to revive them and give their boss monsters protection is really good. A great Link-2 monster.

Art: 4/5 2 days late to review an elf, but that’s how things go sometimes.

My #4: Kelbek the Ancient Vanguard/Agido the Ancient Sentinel (again, same purpose basically, so couldn’t pick one over the other)

Number 4’s another insane card that I’m sure any competitive player will be very familiar with; we covered Spright Elf before, but at the time I didn’t fully grasp just how generic the card really was. Spright Elf is a Link 2 FIRE Thunder monster, which is normal for a Spright, and has down left and down right arrows, typical for a support-type Link 2. It also has a mediocre attack stat of 1400, but it more than makes up for it with its painfully generic summoning condition of any two monsters, as long as one (!) of them is Rank, Link, or level 2. This is deceptively generic, since any deck with a level 2 monster, or even able to summon a Link 2 (which is 95% of decks) can summon Spright Elf.

We’ve gone over Elf’s role in Spright, being a major playmaker in the bread and butter Toadally Awesome combo (both the old version that’s now illegal as of the banning of Ronintoadin, and the new version which utilizes Spright Sprind). Being able to revive any level 2 monster is an exceptionally powerful effect; on your own turn, it’s obviously an extender for basically every deck that has level 2 monsters. On your opponent’s turn, there are quite a few strategies you can pull off; I’ve mentioned using I:P Masquerena to make Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess on your opponent’s turn to bypass Elf’s inability to be used as Link material the turn it’s summoned. Some combos summon Diviner of the Herald to destroy an Artifact Scythe set by Artifact Dagda for an Extra deck lock; if nothing else, there’s nothing wrong with simply reviving Spright Red or Carrot for another negate to pressure your opponent. Even Tearlaments decks ended up using Elf to combo off of Tearlaments Merrli. While Gigantic Spright didn’t make the list, it says volumes about Elf’s power and splashability when it made the Top 10 in its place.

Art: 4/5 The International Space Station?! Can’t remember when it had gatling guns though.
