Starving Venom Fusion Dragon – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Hello Pojo Fans,

Starving Venom Fusion Dragon is our Throwback choice and one of those monsters seeing a lot of play outside the archetype.

2 DARK monsters on the field, except Tokens makes this care immediately playable in any deck that can Fusion Summon. DARK is arguably the best Attribute and most supported in the game. Super Poly is at 3, this card is appearing all over in Side and Main Decks. With that out of the way, lets get to the card.

Strong ATK, ton of support behind it. ATK boost for the turn its Fusion Summoned can pump this cards ATK up well over 4000ATK. There’s likely always going to be a Special Summoned monster on your opponents side of the field, so you will be getting this ATK boost. The Phantom of Chaos-style effect for the turn is useful, but not as practical as it once was. With Link and Xyz monsters dominating the game, this effect isn’t in high demand. Despite that, you will have times you can copy the name and effect of an opponents Level 5 or higher and benefit from their effect(s) (like BLS). Without the ATK boost it is still a strong body on the field that can wipe all Special Summoned monsters your opponent has when it destroyed. A Raigeki effect to finish up its effects is overpowering. Your opponent has to consolidate to avoid losing too much, or find a way to spin or remove your Starving Venom Fusion Dragon from the field. Many decks can’t do this, they are straight-forward in how they get LP to zero.

There isn’t anything not to like about Starving Venom Fusion Dragon. The only drawback (if any) is that you can’t use Tokens for the summon…big deal.

Since it’s Yuri’s archetype, I thought we’ll look at his ace monster and one of the best Super Polymerization targets in the game today, Starving Venom Fusion Dragon.

Starving Venom is a Level 8 DARK Dragon Fusion with 2800 ATK and 2000 DEF. Fairly good stats for a Level 8, DARK is a great attribute and Dragon is a good type. The fusion requirements are any 2 DARK monsters on the field that aren’t Tokens. I can get them not wanting you to use the hand, because that’d be too easy, but the simple summoning requirements are why this is a great card to run with Super Polymerization against DARK decks, and DARK is a very popular attribute. If this card is Fusion Summoned, you can make this card gain ATK equal to one of your opponent’s Special Summoned monster’s ATK for the turn. This should be easy to pull out if you didn’t use all of their Special Summoned monsters to summon this with Super Polymerization. Once per turn, you can target a Level 5 or higher monster your opponent controls, and until the end of the turn this card will gain that monster’s name and effects. I mean, Level 5+ monsters aren’t exactly dead, so I can see this coming up sometimes and others this effect just won’t matter. The final effect is that if this Fusion Summoned card is destroyed, you can destroy all your opponent’s Special Summoned monsters. I’m fine with it having to be Fusion Summoned for this effect, you shouldn’t be able to revive this and keep doing it upon destruction, and it being able to clear your opponent’s monsters (likely their best monsters) is a great effect to have after you already likely used their monsters to summon this. It’s a good card to have in Predaplants since they can summon it easily and it’s a better card to use with Super Polymerization to really hinder the opponent.

Starving Venom Fusion Dragon is our Throwback Thursday this week, and this card had one prior review (nearly 3 years ago).

SVFD is a Level 8, Dark, Dragon type Fusion, with 2800 attack and 2000 defense.  Powerful enough to be a powerhouse, and fair stats for a Level 8.  Fusion requirements here are any two generic Dark Monsters (excluding Tokens).  So, if Fusion Summoned you can have this card gain attack equal to a Special Summoned Monster of your choice that belongs to your opponent.

That can sure make this card a brute in a hurry.  That could easily be a 2000+ attack boost, and then you’re looking at a card with 4800 (or more) attack, and a direct shot there would likely be enough to win you a game.  Even if that only lasts for a turn, it could be all you need.  Once a turn, you can Target a Level 5 or higher Monster your opponent controls.

This card becomes that card until the End of that current turn.  Attack stays the same, but its name and effect(s) transfer to this card.  Given all our Extra Deck plays and beyond, for you to steal just a Monster Effect doesn’t seem it’s entirely reliable, but there could be times that can pay off.  If destroyed (having been Fusion Summoned) destroy all Special Summoned Monsters your opponent controls.

Love that last effect though.  Given the broad range, and that this guy has no protection of his own, it forces your opponent to play around that, knowing what could happen.  Or just ensure they don’t have any Special Summoned Monsters out.  Still a good card though for a theme, and even outside of, given the absolute crazy ease of performing a Fusion Summon for this card.
